Car Accidents: Will raising the driving age help?

A great deal on discussion always focuses on whether raising the legal driving age really helps in reducing the number of car accidents. But, do teenagers really cause more accidents due to poor judgement? Would limiting the hours in which they can drive and the people with whom they can drive improve the situation? In other words, are teenagers more likely to have car accidents when they are with their friends? What is the legal driving age in your country or area? Please share your ideas on this topic. I'm interested to hear how different cultures view young drivers.

  2. The legal driving age is 18 in Taiwan, but it's not a big help to reduce the car accidents. The keys are the road planning and self-control of driver. The top 1 reason of car accident is drunk-driving here and top 2 is improper planning of road here.
    And.......Too crowding here.

  4. In my opinion, the problem is how we get the permission to drive. Differents countries have differentes rules for it, but it's very important the development of a hard knowledge control about driving.

  5. In my country, Japan, people of 18 and over can get driver's licenses. At times I hear about terrible car accidents caused by young people with their friends. I think the rule should limit the age that can give someone a ride. Because sometimes they become so excited about driving because of the new experience even if they don't have enough skill.
The accidents caused by drunk- drivers had been increasing, so that the new rule says if you do drunk-driving, because the plice do the spot checks on the road, you get fined a lot of money for it. I feel it was effective. People are careful about it much more than before.

  6. In my country- Viet nam - an developing country. Everybody uses motor as the principle engine in transportation. According to the lastest monitering of experts, the age level cause accidents the most is teenager. Especially, the teenagers who don't have enough age to drive motor. In my judgement, raising the driving age will help reducing sort of accidents.
In some situations, people that they drive with can influence the driver and can cause accident. For instance, when a group of young friends going together, they might be excited to raise the speed and that is one of the reasons to make accidents. Or when you driving with your parents, if you driving so fast, the parents cann’t allow you to drive with that high speed. So, you have to drive very carefully.
In my country, the legal age to drive the motor is 18, and with oto, you must be more 21.

  7. In Taiwan, the legal required age for having a driving license is 18. We also have teens' driving problem. In my opinions, regulating who and when of teen driving could improve situation. Some other things we can do are education teens. It's always a tough,time-consuming, and long-term task to do. Once the notion be told all the time around teens, it helps to eliminate many potential dangers. Also, I am interested the concept that whom sitting with a driver could effect his or her driving. For example, friends in a car could ask you to cut in the line or speed up. Drivers need more confident to insist on things he or she supposes to do to keep safe.

  8. The legal driving age is 18 in Russia, but I think it's rather low. I consider that it should be put up to 21, because at the age of 18 people still can't realise the danger they undergo when they are breaking road laws. As for limittig the hours in which they can drive,it's not a bad idea, but restricting the people with whom they can drive is ridiculous from my point of view.

  9. Raising the driving age should surely help prevent accidents. Every rule has its pros and cons, but in my personal opinion with age comes important qualities that of responsibility and maturity. Ofcourse the course of action against rising rate of accidents can only made possible if the parental guidance and traffic regulatory authorities play efficient roles in an individual's life. In India, my country of origin there are cases of underaged driving calamities at a rise. The only lesson to be learnt is that if proper guidance and enough time to groom be given to any evolving individual, accidents can notice a steep decline

  14. In our home countries (Mexico and Germany) the legal age of getting a driver's license is 18. We agree that a person at this age is old enough to realize the responsibilities of driving a car. People under this age tend to drive without being aware of dangerous situations. We also agree that raising the age over 18 is not convenient because a driver's license (especially if you live out of the city without public transportation) is very important to be independent.

  20. In Korea, it is possible for those who are over 18 to take the exam for drivers license. I believe that people at this age is able to drive with responsibilies and obey the road rules. For decreasing the accidents and casualties, the first on to be gotton rid of is drunkdriving. This must be spotted on street by the police strongly and the punishment need to be enought to force them not to driving drunk ever since.

  21. in my view raising the driving agfe would also contribute to lessen the car accident since, I bellieve that the older one are wiser enough to tacle the different apects of proper driving unlike the young ones whore are tend to be more careless and improdent, although not all but still there are many situations that the younger ones are the reason of car accident, some of them are seeking for thrill and do not even bother to what may be the consequencies, as of those illegal car racing.

  22. In Italy,as in many other countries, you can start to drive a car when you are 18. However, some speed limits are lower during the first three years of your driving licence. For example, normal speed limit in highways is 130 km/h, but not-experienced drivers cannot exceed 100 km/h. That's the law, but obviously it is easily breakable, because it is not possible for the police to know directly, when checking the speed of a car, if the driver is a "3-year-old-driver" or not and you can't stop him to ask for his licence, unless he is running over 130 km/h, but then anybody would be fined, not just the neo-driver!
Nevertheless, several accidents are caused by high speed and by driving while drunk: this is a big problem, especially on Saturday nights, when many young people coming out of discos put themselves at the wheel in really poor physical and emotional conditions, endangering not merely their lives (it would be their own fault) but also others'.

  24. In a way yes if maturity comes with ages then i believe raising the age limit on our drivers will atleast avoid minors who has slow judgement in tragic situations like accidents will be avoided but we have to look at it in a broader perspective it is not just low judgment that affect our drivers behavior on our roads, stricter rules regarding intoxication should be applied so that no person under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be on our roads because this substance is i think are the common causes of accidents on our drivers, minor or not.

  25. I believe that age of driving is a necessary restriction for the youngest .One reason is they influence each other and sometimes convince each other to inappropriate behavior. It is a psychology stage for teenagers to follow the peer's pressure and it is a normal. So risky attitude directly follow to accidents. But I found a some interesting system in Alberta (Canada) for all people who have not had driver experience before indipendentfrom age .You can't drive alone for for One year, after that you only obtain prohibited driver license. So I understand the logic of this law, But I don't agree that all people start to study driving in a young age and they need almost two years for developing full driver skills.I came from city where I did not to need to drive and for me stages system was really inconvenient.

  26. I'm Mexican. In Mexico the age to have a permission to drive is at the age of 18. By the way, when you have 16 you can have a provisional permission if your parents are responsibles for you. I think that the problem is not the age to drive, the problem is if the person is mature and responsible. Sometimes you can have 20 or more and you are an irresponsible person that you can do a lot of problems.

In my opinion, it could be dangerous to let teenagers drive. They don't have a lot of experiences about driving, and getting a driver's licenses doesn't mean "Can drive safely"

  35. Hi Randall:

First of all, congratulations for your wonderful work. I don't have words to express how important your site is for an english learner like me.
So, keep on and never stop.

Well, the reason of this post is the association between the expression "traffic ticket" and such a thing like an "car insurance". In my country, off course there is a legal obligation to have a car insurance, in order to respond for damages against people potencially injured in car accidents. But there is no relationship between fines(multas) and car insurances.

Another type of car insurances are those which you purchase from private companies, normally more expensive than the others that i've mentioned before, but i haven't heard they give cover as for traffic ticket.

    So the deal is this:

Maybe, a traffic ticket is not referring to or is not equal to a fine ticket, and that is the cause of my confusion.

Please, could you make a comment about this?

Sorry if my explanation was something confusing too, but I am an spanish native speaker.(Actually, I live in Santiago de Chile)

Thanks again for your site Randall.

  36. In Taiwan, people over 18 can start getting driver's license, and I think it's not too young. Because many accidents here were caused by some people who don't have licenses.(Either they don't pass driver's exam or their licenses were revoked due to some serious violations of the laws.)

In my country the legal driving age is 18. There are 4 category of driver licences: A, B, C, D. You shoul choice which one you want to get. Studing continues for 3 months for every category. After finishing driver cources you should pass 2 exames:theory and practice.
The price of stydying varys in my coutry from 700$ - 1000$ it depandes of region, city, and prestige of the school.
Whell, I can't say about special cources for ladies, which have place to be. I think that ladies have much thinks in their head and sometimes they need special explanation about how to concentrate on the road.
To say more such couces are very populer in my city.

Also if you want to go to the other country by car you should confirme your licence and translate it in English in special departments.

I wish everybody to be care on the road.

  40. In my country, Vietnam, the legal driving age is 18. But there are a lot of teenagers whose the age is less than 18 use motorbikes. This turns out to increase accidents. But that is not the only reason. Some other reason causing accidents are driving in drunk situation and falling asleep. It also because of the bad traffic system. The surface of streets here are not flat because of frequently spading. So I think raising the driving age is not the full solution. Besides, we have to make a strict set of rules and forms of punishment. And the government should concern about improving traffic facilities. However, whether reducing traffic accidents or not depends on awareness of every individual.

  41. It’s not that different in my country. Teenagers, until eighteen, cannot drive in any circumstances. And now, in accord to new regulations, they won’t be able to drive out of the cities or in big highways and stuff. This was an important measure taken by politicians to cut back on accidents or imprudence for some drivers. For being young, most teenagers are far to understand some principles, which can guarantee a good behavior in the traffic. Most of them are heedless, worried about amenities, and because of that cannot focus on basic points. Anyhow, this is just the beginning for the ideal. Older people can cause accident the same way, as well as drugs and drunks. Everyone knows that, and politicians should punish them more precisely.

Life is a gift and can't be cast away for an excessive consumtion of alcohol. The governments in defferent countries can pass new laws and restrictions, but it is absolutely impossible to control everyone on the road. In my country car accidents are the main cause of death despite all the laws and restrictions. I insist, responsability and respect for others are the key to solve the problem.

With increased publicity and education to teenagers could reduce the recklessness on the wheel.
The advertising campaigns in internet help to development conscience between the teenagers, because they always have connected. Like this, I think that the traffic accidents could reduce it.
The pedestrians too have fault in cause to traffic accidents, because they (we) are imprudent when they to go for a walk in the street and not respect the signposting.

  58. Exceed the speed limit is the number 1 cause of dead in Costa Rica. The number 2 is the drink. But now in my country the law is very hard with motorists who drive drunk. His car is taken by the goverment and never is returned and the person could go to jail from 2 to 3 years. Nevertheless the last month of 2009 more than 300 cars were confiscated by the goverment and motorists were sent to jail because they were driving under the effects of the alcohol.
I think that course to drivers before getting licenses should be more strict and also authorities should put in practice a psicological test to evaluate if the person have not only the ability but the respect for other motorist and pedestrians. If they do not approve this psicological test I think they should wait at least 1 year and do the test again. When they finally has passed this test, they could continue with the practical test.

  59. Nowadays we have more car accidents than a few years ago and this situation get me worried when i am driving my car in the street.

First of all there is a discussion about the best age to drive and get a license. In my country the determined age to drive is eighteen and i agree with this. I think that a person with eighteen years old has maturity enough to drive.

In addition, i think that raise the driving age will not decrease the numbers of accidents, because the problem is the education and the ausence of punishments instead the right age to drive.

Furthermore, in most cases the accidents are caused by drunk people, younger and older. In fact, i believe that this occours because the punishments are low for drunk people who drive.

To sum up the problem is not raise the driving age. Firstly we have to educate better our people and secondly the punishments must to be more effective, because with hard punishments the people will think twice before driving in inadequate conditions.

  82. I think that that problems are because the people who drive is bad prepared, in my conuntry i haven't see a lot of driving schools, and most of the people who drive in my country now learned because his parents.

  83. Here in Colombia the legal driving age is 18 but the teenagers dont cause too many accidents as the drunk adults (or the guerrilla). Here the people can drive the time they want, they can drive with the people they want but in the driving test they have to be, also, driving with the teacher. There are not too much rules, only the basic ones but with some regulations that the trafic officers have been doing the accidents have decreased.

  84. I think the teeneger could have many accidents because when they drive a car the talk with the cellphone, they listen music very loudly and they drive very fast.

  85. I think that the problem of the traffic accidents is bad habits and I also think raising the driving age will not help because also old people causes traffic accidents that sometimes causes a bigger tragedy.

  86. First of all, congratulations for all your amazing work.

We must follow all the rules to have security for ourselves and also to others in the road.

  87. Nowadays there are a huge number of car accidents and people are worried about if could be better raise the driving age to help.

Firstly, I think that raise the driving age will not help because the problem is about the level of education that a society has. In fact, the solution could be educate better our kids in the traffic to improve the drivers.

In addition, the punishment for traffic accidents are very low and because of this people do not be afraid about the punishments. For this reason, I think if the punishments are stronger people would think twice before make something wrong.

  89. hello, i'm living in Vietnam. In our country, there are not many cars like in developed countries. However, many car accidents have also been happening, especially accidents of coaches - the car carring passengers. Whenever the luner new year (the traditional new year of easten country) comes, millions of people from big cities come back their hometown. Therefore, at that time the drivers control their coachs running very fast in order to have the next voyage as soon as possible. That reason causes a lot of accidents every year.

I hope that our country will upgrade the train system to reduce the pressure on coaches and have more trict ways to reduce this proplem.

i think driving in younger age not only increase the number of driving accident but also it causes more awareness of driving because the cautious more old drivers pay the more number of driving accidents.
in my country the age of getting drivers license is 18 and dont cause problem more then the older one.
for curbing the number of driving accidents the increasing punishment and investigating the other factors are so important.p

  91. Teenagers are immature. This means that a great deal of prevention should be implemented to help them be aware of the dangers to which they are exposed when driving. However, I don't think that teenagers are, by definition, responsible for accidents on the road. It is imperative that drivers, regardless of their age, abide by traffic signs. To ensure that traffic signs are abided by, penal law should be enforced as a punishment.
I therefore think that people should not jump to conclusions. Anyone having a driving licence is supposed to know to drive. On the road, discipline is important. In other words, the road is neither a place for racing nor a place for drunk driving. Because what is at stake is people's lives; and it would just be awesome if no one would die in a car crash on the raod.

  92. I think the key issue is drunk driving. It's punished quite hard in my country (France). Young people can loose most of the points of their driving licence in case of drunk driving. Maybe it should be more severe. But the best way to prevent accident is to fight against alcohol in society (i-e ads, movies...)

  93. In my point view, everyone exactly teenager should follow the rules of driving to save him/herself and others from the rick .

  94. I think raising the driving age is a good thing some people are not mature enough to drive when they are 16 for instance they drive a bit foolishly and they are not aware of some dangers or the other pepole on the road ..

  96. It may help, but the fact of the matter is that for most families, having their teens able to drive themselves can be very convenient. We just need to do a better job educating our children on the dangers of distracted driving and impaired driving.

  97. In Sweden, they are very tough with driving license. So, the level of car-accidents is pretty low. Otherwise, I have no idea about what cause most accidents, but I can still guess the majority of people who always are involved in accidents must be youngsters. It can depend on drink-cases, or while blabbing on a cellphone. One thing that I know is that car-accidents do not happen among the elders, most of the time. The driving age is 18, but it is not helpful according to many people, involve experts.
I don't think that (when it comes to youth-people) most of the cases can depend on poor skills from the drivers' side, but however, carelessness. And it has with the brain to do. You know, how much is your age influences your mind, the way you think. When you get older you are careful with things, but you don't do that when you are young.

  98. I think the suitable age to drive is around 18-21. At that time people start to have a great awareness of making money and how hard it would be, so they'll try their best to pay attention to everything they do. Smaller age wouldn't affect, if that teenager is good enough and well-educated of driving.

  99. I think it's true that all the teenager should not drive by themselves because they feel so exited about their new skill and want to drive everywhere for no reason. In my country they don't allow people below 18 to drive which is good.

  100. Where I live, Brazil, you can get your driving license when you are eighteen or more than eighteen. In my opinion, the situation that Randall propose, can happen in all places of the world, when a teenager is with your friends, he or she likes to show them that he or she know how to drive a car, and he or she is the 'best' person of the world doing it. So, in my opinion, to stop it, we have to show all teenagers what consequences they will see If they cause an accident, and we can do it from Internet ads, in TV, and all entertainment vehicles. These vehicules that I mentioned are used for a lot of teenagers, so it is very efficient...

  101. Our country's driving age, Vietnam, is 18 years old. In my opinion, that's a great time for people to have license and driving a car, due to the fact that people at this age will be more careful from driving a car and reduce accident.
I think that people shouldn't strict the driving time because people in Vietnam are really busy and don't have many time to go outside. In terms of people they can drive with and improve the situation, I think it should be a driving teacher, someone in your family knows how to drive to make your experience become less pressure.

  102. Well in my country the people would have the driver license since 16 years, but if you're under 18 you can't go out your department alone and then when you birth 18 you have to renovate your license because you ID change, that's all.

  103. Truth be told, there’s no conceivable way anybody could state ‘do this, this and this and you will breeze through your Automatic driving lessons Wolverhampton. It’s a test that is gigantically subject to the day. It’s in no way like an exam or a meeting, there’s no set strategy you can utilize.

  104. No matter how many rules it is. the most important factor is the government. Even when they raise the age of driving permission, this rule will be wrecked so easily because this is Viet Nam :). What i'm trying to say is the youngsters who get caught would easily escape just by giving the money the cops then they can run away. THAT IS NOT OKAY, they dont have any lessons, experiences or anything. Personally, i think the education is the best option the tackle this issue. The better education about driving rules, the less accidents and deaths on the road.
And btw, i just have seen a really effective method in Japan how they have almost solved the problem. They created something on the road which produces sound loudly and annoyingly, or normally and comfortably depends on which speed ppl drive. In the other words. The faster ppl drive, the more annoying and noisy the sound on the road create and vice versa. This method have decrease dramatically the accidents and deaths on road which i think really effective. :) !

  105. In Albania, the driving licence (Albanian: Leje Drejtimi) is the official document which authorizes an individual to drive a motor vehicle: motorbike, car, truck or bus. This driving permit can be obtained only after the successful passing of the theoretical exam on road code knowledge followed by the practical exam which tests an individual's on the road driving skills. The license is issued by the General Directorate of Road Transport Services . In order to drive a vehicle in Albania you must be at least 18 years old and have a full driving licence valid in your country of residence. You will need to have the photo part of the licence and the paper part, you will also need to obtain an international drivers licence .
