Car Accidents: Will raising the driving age help?

A great deal on discussion always focuses on whether raising the legal driving age really helps in reducing the number of car accidents. But, do teenagers really cause more accidents due to poor judgement? Would limiting the hours in which they can drive and the people with whom they can drive improve the situation? In other words, are teenagers more likely to have car accidents when they are with their friends? What is the legal driving age in your country or area? Please share your ideas on this topic. I'm interested to hear how different cultures view young drivers.

If to be honest I envy you. You have problems which we haven't. And not because we have no problem, and our problems are worse. Concerning the rule of the rode our country (I'm from Russia) is like a wild safari.

The legal driving age is 18 in Taiwan, but it's not a big help to reduce the car accidents. The keys are the road planning and self-control of driver. The top 1 reason of car accident is drunk-driving here and top 2 is improper planning of road here.
And.......Too crowding here.

For my opinion, i think the age is not important if the person is already aware of danger of driving and pay attention when he drives.

In my opinion, the problem is how we get the permission to drive. Differents countries have differentes rules for it, but it's very important the development of a hard knowledge control about driving.

In my country, Japan, people of 18 and over can get driver's licenses. At times I hear about terrible car accidents caused by young people with their friends. I think the rule should limit the age that can give someone a ride. Because sometimes they become so excited about driving because of the new experience even if they don't have enough skill.
The accidents caused by drunk- drivers had been increasing, so that the new rule says if you do drunk-driving, because the plice do the spot checks on the road, you get fined a lot of money for it. I feel it was effective. People are careful about it much more than before.

In my country- Viet nam - an developing country. Everybody uses motor as the principle engine in transportation. According to the lastest monitering of experts, the age level cause accidents the most is teenager. Especially, the teenagers who don't have enough age to drive motor. In my judgement, raising the driving age will help reducing sort of accidents.
In some situations, people that they drive with can influence the driver and can cause accident. For instance, when a group of young friends going together, they might be excited to raise the speed and that is one of the reasons to make accidents. Or when you driving with your parents, if you driving so fast, the parents cann’t allow you to drive with that high speed. So, you have to drive very carefully.
In my country, the legal age to drive the motor is 18, and with oto, you must be more 21.

In Taiwan, the legal required age for having a driving license is 18. We also have teens' driving problem. In my opinions, regulating who and when of teen driving could improve situation. Some other things we can do are education teens. It's always a tough,time-consuming, and long-term task to do. Once the notion be told all the time around teens, it helps to eliminate many potential dangers. Also, I am interested the concept that whom sitting with a driver could effect his or her driving. For example, friends in a car could ask you to cut in the line or speed up. Drivers need more confident to insist on things he or she supposes to do to keep safe.

The legal driving age is 18 in Russia, but I think it's rather low. I consider that it should be put up to 21, because at the age of 18 people still can't realise the danger they undergo when they are breaking road laws. As for limittig the hours in which they can drive,it's not a bad idea, but restricting the people with whom they can drive is ridiculous from my point of view.

Raising the driving age should surely help prevent accidents. Every rule has its pros and cons, but in my personal opinion with age comes important qualities that of responsibility and maturity. Ofcourse the course of action against rising rate of accidents can only made possible if the parental guidance and traffic regulatory authorities play efficient roles in an individual's life. In India, my country of origin there are cases of underaged driving calamities at a rise. The only lesson to be learnt is that if proper guidance and enough time to groom be given to any evolving individual, accidents can notice a steep decline

I think driving age is the best. But teenage drivers drive dangerous. Everyone should be more careful.

Eventhough teenagers know driving laws and rules, they tend to have peer pressuer to race or speed while driving. These behaviors easily cause car accidents. We recommend that they discuss their driving behaviors in the classroom in order to reduce car accidents.

I think that life styles have changed and teenagers now are less responsible and aware of their acts. They should be driving a car when they turn eighteen years old, not less.

In our home countries (Mexico and Germany) the legal age of getting a driver's license is 18. We agree that a person at this age is old enough to realize the responsibilities of driving a car. People under this age tend to drive without being aware of dangerous situations. We also agree that raising the age over 18 is not convenient because a driver's license (especially if you live out of the city without public transportation) is very important to be independent.

Teenagers tend to drive carelessly, they often have the radio on very loudly. It makes a thunderous noise, especially when they carry passenger of the age.
Most teenagers who just got their driver's license are lacking driving experience. They frequently don't pay attention to the motorist or the pedestian.

In my country, it takes a day and costs $10 to practice and take a test on the driving rules, but if you pay $30 to the official it just takes 30 min. to get the driver license. (Lie Lan Ho,Indonesia)

In Indonesia, for get the legal driving licence you must up 17th. You must pass the exam, theory and practice. But it's not easy to pass on them. Everybody, need more minimal 3 times be succesful.

They (police officier) allways say that's you're not good enought yet on driving. But, if you give them money to their pocket, you might even not to do that exams. You've got your licence...Just simply stupid like that ha...huraaaa !

Lie Lan Ho.. you're really right. It's useless for age limiting or other rules on our country... very corrupts

in my country you have to be sixteen to drive i know it is young. But i don't think raising the driving age will help, because its a question of self control cause many adults are having accidents every day due to speeding or alcool....

I think that raising the age for getting the driver license would be good, because most of the teenagers go crazy driving a car and most of them aren't responsabe.

In Korea, it is possible for those who are over 18 to take the exam for drivers license. I believe that people at this age is able to drive with responsibilies and obey the road rules. For decreasing the accidents and casualties, the first on to be gotton rid of is drunkdriving. This must be spotted on street by the police strongly and the punishment need to be enought to force them not to driving drunk ever since.

in my view raising the driving agfe would also contribute to lessen the car accident since, I bellieve that the older one are wiser enough to tacle the different apects of proper driving unlike the young ones whore are tend to be more careless and improdent, although not all but still there are many situations that the younger ones are the reason of car accident, some of them are seeking for thrill and do not even bother to what may be the consequencies, as of those illegal car racing.

In Italy,as in many other countries, you can start to drive a car when you are 18. However, some speed limits are lower during the first three years of your driving licence. For example, normal speed limit in highways is 130 km/h, but not-experienced drivers cannot exceed 100 km/h. That's the law, but obviously it is easily breakable, because it is not possible for the police to know directly, when checking the speed of a car, if the driver is a "3-year-old-driver" or not and you can't stop him to ask for his licence, unless he is running over 130 km/h, but then anybody would be fined, not just the neo-driver!
Nevertheless, several accidents are caused by high speed and by driving while drunk: this is a big problem, especially on Saturday nights, when many young people coming out of discos put themselves at the wheel in really poor physical and emotional conditions, endangering not merely their lives (it would be their own fault) but also others'.

in my country Saudi car accidents are due to many reason in the top of it, is speed . the legal driving is 18 .it is true that teenagers are more likely to have car accidents than any group of people . but currently the government legalize a strict rules to prevent those teenagers from killing themselves.

In a way yes if maturity comes with ages then i believe raising the age limit on our drivers will atleast avoid minors who has slow judgement in tragic situations like accidents will be avoided but we have to look at it in a broader perspective it is not just low judgment that affect our drivers behavior on our roads, stricter rules regarding intoxication should be applied so that no person under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be on our roads because this substance is i think are the common causes of accidents on our drivers, minor or not.

I believe that age of driving is a necessary restriction for the youngest .One reason is they influence each other and sometimes convince each other to inappropriate behavior. It is a psychology stage for teenagers to follow the peer's pressure and it is a normal. So risky attitude directly follow to accidents. But I found a some interesting system in Alberta (Canada) for all people who have not had driver experience before indipendentfrom age .You can't drive alone for for One year, after that you only obtain prohibited driver license. So I understand the logic of this law, But I don't agree that all people start to study driving in a young age and they need almost two years for developing full driver skills.I came from city where I did not to need to drive and for me stages system was really inconvenient.

I'm Mexican. In Mexico the age to have a permission to drive is at the age of 18. By the way, when you have 16 you can have a provisional permission if your parents are responsibles for you. I think that the problem is not the age to drive, the problem is if the person is mature and responsible. Sometimes you can have 20 or more and you are an irresponsible person that you can do a lot of problems.

In Brazil, the legal driving age is 18, and i think it is correct because when you are 18, you are more responsable, and if you do something wrong, you will be punnished.

In my opinion, it could be dangerous to let teenagers drive. They don't have a lot of experiences about driving, and getting a driver's licenses doesn't mean "Can drive safely"
Even if the driver is a car racer whose age is under 20, he/she could put people in jeoperdy.

I live in Ivory Coast and I'm currently passing my driver's license. In my country, people can have the license since the age of 18. the procedure is simple, you first pass your road code examination and after 20 hours of checked driving you pass an examibation for the driver license. there are 5 categories of license wich are from A to E. The most used is the B type wi=hich allows you to drive cars and some cycles... wish me q good luck for my examination which will take place at the end of the month!

In the Moldova you can get drive's license since you get 18. But anyway some teenagers under 18 joyride around the town to show others that they are adults already. This is just one of many road accidents reasons. A lot of people drive their cars when they are drunk.

It may help to some extent. However, the most important philosophy that needs to be inculcated in every one is "Safe Drive". Parents and teachers may start coaching the children even before they attain the age of 18.

Hi Randall:

First of all, congratulations for your wonderful work. I don't have words to express how important your site is for an english learner like me.
So, keep on and never stop.

Well, the reason of this post is the association between the expression "traffic ticket" and such a thing like an "car insurance". In my country, off course there is a legal obligation to have a car insurance, in order to respond for damages against people potencially injured in car accidents. But there is no relationship between fines(multas) and car insurances.

Another type of car insurances are those which you purchase from private companies, normally more expensive than the others that i've mentioned before, but i haven't heard they give cover as for traffic ticket.

So the deal is this:

Maybe, a traffic ticket is not referring to or is not equal to a fine ticket, and that is the cause of my confusion.

Please, could you make a comment about this?

Sorry if my explanation was something confusing too, but I am an spanish native speaker.(Actually, I live in Santiago de Chile)

Thanks again for your site Randall.

In Taiwan, people over 18 can start getting driver's license, and I think it's not too young. Because many accidents here were caused by some people who don't have licenses.(Either they don't pass driver's exam or their licenses were revoked due to some serious violations of the laws.)
The Government should take serious action to punish those bad guys.

Hello everybody.

In my country the legal driving age is 18. There are 4 category of driver licences: A, B, C, D. You shoul choice which one you want to get. Studing continues for 3 months for every category. After finishing driver cources you should pass 2 exames:theory and practice.
The price of stydying varys in my coutry from 700$ - 1000$ it depandes of region, city, and prestige of the school.
Whell, I can't say about special cources for ladies, which have place to be. I think that ladies have much thinks in their head and sometimes they need special explanation about how to concentrate on the road.
To say more such couces are very populer in my city.

Also if you want to go to the other country by car you should confirme your licence and translate it in English in special departments.

I wish everybody to be care on the road.

Helen.

In jordan, you can't get a driving licence till become 18 years old, and it begins as a temporer license that can be withdrawn any time, if the laws are violated, also for each kind of vehicle, there is a special license, actually i would rather if they make an amendment to the age act and make it 21 at least, because the majority of car accidents occur due to youth irresponsibility.
