Snacks: What do people enjoy?

Many people enjoy snacks between meals, either while at work or after school when they return home. However, the snacks people each can vary widely from culture to culture or family to family. While some people think of potato chips as a snack, I really enjoyed Edamae, or boiled soybeans while I was in Japan. Basically, you boil the beans with the shell in salt and then serve. At that point, you just remove the pod, or outside shell, and enjoy. So, what about you? Share any unique or interesting snacks that people eat where you live. Randall

  3. I'm really glad to hear you like Japanese edamame, Randall, because I'm Japanese. I usually have edamame with beer. That combination is nice! When I lived in the U.S. until last summer, I liked corn chips and chocolate covered dry fruits. I still miss them! Now I sometimes have "Okaki" which is a kind of rice crackers. On around New year's day we have "Omochi" which made from sticky rice. We have it with soysauce and seaweed or soy powder and sugar. I'm looking forward it!

  10. In Taiwan, one of famous snacks is the red bean cake which is a crispy brown shelf with mashed sweet red bean. Also, many Taiwanese including me like stinky Tofu as a snack. Unfortunately, lots of Westerns don't enjoy sweet red bean and stinky tofu. They think red bean shouldn't be cooked into sweet one. Also, they are confused about why people can eat stinky food. Actually, you won't smell the odor while you eating; I especially love the preserved vegetables as the side dish with stinky tofu. Eating the tofu with the sour and sweet preserved vegetable is one of the pleasures in the lifetime.

  32. Although the press says that dieters who eat mid-morning snacks lose less weight, the fact is that this could be because they choose the wrong snack, says Roberta Re, PhD, researcher of nutrition in Leatherhead Food Research.

Re and his colleagues found that when people ate 1 1/2 serving of almonds (45 grams) around 11am, were less hungry at lunch and dinner, and consumed fewer calories throughout the day than those who did not eat almonds.

What is the recommended for a mid-morning snack quantity? About 45 grams or about 35 almonds.

  34. We are a fifth grade class in Finland, and we like multiple snacks. We like fruit like watermelon, mango and bananas. We like bread with Nutella (a chocolate and hazelnut spread). Our unhealthy snacks are particularly the same as unhealthy foods everywhere else. In Finland we have really healthy foods. At Easter we eat mämmi (a brown rye porridge) as a snack. We also like Carelian pies (a pastry that has rice, potato, or carrot inside it) with egg butter.

  35. Good morning, Randall!
I'm from Belarus and usually I eat fruits or sandwiches for snack. An apple or banana is , of course, more healthy than sandwich with ham or sausage but it' s sooo tasty! I also eat salads between meals, for example, vegetable with tomatoes, cucumbers, onion and sour cream.
We practically have no street food and a lot of people eat fast food as a snack. It can be pizza, french fries, burgers.
