Classroom Behavior: Shy or Not?

I often have students from many countries in my classrooms. Students from Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Columbia, and many other countries. I know what to expect when these students come together for the first time.

Some of my students speak out and actively engage in the classroom without a care in the world if their grammar is correct or not; other students, however, are almost paralyzed with fear, and they won't say anything until they are absolutely sure that their grammar is perfect . . .  and by that time, I'm eating my lunch 20 minutes after the class ended.

Unfortunately, all of these students don't know how to interpret each other's classroom behavior. Are they shy? Are they asleep? Are they bored?

Thus, during the first few days of class, I try to explain how past classroom experiences and expectation in different countries affects what students say and do in my classroom.

Thus, my question to you is this: Are students from your country hesitant to participate in class, and if so, why? Share your ideas.

  2. I think not all Asian students are shy but most of them are shy it is because of the culture. In class we respect teacher and listen to the teacher. But this is influenced by the teacher who is taking the class if the teacher is friendly to the students, students won't be shy.

  3. I think not all Asian student are shy, because someone try to learn english.
Then if they shy, they can't well in english.
And I think teacher will take care of the student who want to well in english but they were shy.

  4. I think the educational background are related to compose the shyness no matter where we live or who we are.Through my experience of studyabroad, I obviously found out difference how to teach and learn between North America and Japan. Most of the time Japanese teacher prefer to being sceience during classroom. In oppsite, most of student are so positive and always debating in their class when I was in North Amrica. That was tough to me.Not because of I am shy but too different to adjust such a new circomstance!(I got used to the way somehow:-))As my opinion, basically Japanese(anyone alse in Asia)are not shy.The way being taught may divide into shy or not.

  5. Well, you are right. It depends on the educational background. In my school day, we just listened about teacher’s speaking sitting on the chair. There were a few relationships between teachers and students. However, nowadays teachers try to contact their students and have a conversation during class. So I think Asian students are changing more active.

  6. i think ... already asian student in school more listen to speaking teacher and little speaking about topics of lesson.thus students were shy. but today students more common in topic lesson and tell their thought on topic of lesson.

  7. It is safe to say that Asian students are more shy than Western countries' students.
I believe culture is the most important reason. Like Chinese emphasize rank a lot in the history comparing to equality, freedom and creation which are points for western people.
However, Asian people become more open and confident and would like to show themselves more and more. I think that is because the influence of western culture as well as the need of society.

so maybe they having a terms. this term ended they become confidence students.

  9. I think the reason why Asian students are shy is they are used to being quite in class, especially when teacher is saying something.
From my experience, students are not allowed to make noise at all when teacher is saying in class. If someone made a noise, he is punished by teacher. That kind of atmostphere makes students feel far away from teachers or even afraid of them. This is the way asian students have been learned by and why many students don't feel comfortable with teachers.
In this situation, it is no wonder that students hesitate to reveal themselves in class.
In addtion, the young asian students' way of looking at the very active presenter in class is different from that of America.
Asia is of collectivist societies. Hormony in group is considered very important and showing off is not seen good way. I think this cultural factor makes most students prefere to be one of commom students.

  10. I think that a person being shy has more to do with the enviorment rather then it being inherited.for example if a shy person moves to an area were people are rude he will have to eventually react ,in a way to defend himself and finnaly be rude himself. so i think it has to do more with the enviorment...

  11. Well i really think thats true its all beacuse of the educational backgound which asian students do really face. they dont get the individual attention and they have a large no of students in a class which doesn't allow the teacher to improve their interpersonel skills and groom them up.......
Thats why they remain shy through out thier lives

  12. I'm a shying student and I'm really afraid of speaking up in the class. I think the reason is the way of education, too. I was affected by the teachers and their methods in teaching, they talk all the time and we're just the person who answer their questions sometimes. Another reason is the classmates. We tend to mimic others, so if we see everybody in the class to be in quiet and obeying to the teacher absolutely, we don't want to be weird, we don't want to be known as show-off people so we'll like everybody, always be quiet and be shy when speaking up. I think the best way to change this situation is to make the atmosphere of the class more friendly and ebullient, making more discussions about some specific topics to help the shy students express their ideas.

  13. I really like talking in class, I mean expressing myself to my teachers and classmates. But sometimes I feel a bit shy and hard to do that in some subjects. Anyway, English class is the one I like most because I find that I'm more confident when speaking in English than in Vietnamese.

  14. I think perhaps it is a kind of modesty that looks like shyness and maybe also a kind of humbleness, which I think is good in the beginning of a new relationship

  15. I'm a Asian so i think that when i comment to this subject it will be neaer with the fact.

In the frist time go to school(junior school),Teachers taught children have to follow somebody's advice. So when they don't do like this, they will be punished.

When they younger,This habits makes them become shy and dont want to talk about their opinions negative with another, because they scare it's wrong.

But, not all of people like that. Having ones very conffident about themself.

The solution to changes this situation i think first think is teacher should make the children talk their opinons. And to correct if wrong. And we can excercise ourself the skill when talk in crowd.

  16. Asians are shy because they are not in their native land. So, I think they are just thinking they should act in a respectful manner. Educational background is also a factor because maybe they are thinking that their American classmates came from a very standard school compare to them. So, they think that Americans are better to them.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't believe in that students are naturally shy. It is the effect of their culture, Background and environment. Teachers have to encourage shy students to participate in a class. Teachers have to devlelope differnt methods which helps those students.Parents also have to support their children and take them to differnt activties which helps them to teach to interact with people.

  18. The characteristics of a person determined by the surroundings that he or she lives in it.
Because of the fact that shyness is a fruit of culture that we learn from birth till the end of life. Asian people live in a politeness and respectfulness to the others.
Thats why they are a little shy and they think the Americans behave rudely.

  22. so i think that it does not depends on the nation (American or Asian), it more depends on character of a person. But as i studied at the University i saw that rude students got best results than shy ones. As for me, i'm a shy person but almost everytime i had good results without cheating as many rude students did

  23. i think the reason of shy student is not only culture and educational background but also it depends on thier teacher s teaching method and parents.so teachers and parents must take care of them.

First I have to thank you for a wonderful site, you created.Secondly i think the teacher is responsibly for this thing to encourage student to share their ideas and thoughts.i know it is not easy to start speaking second language beside people without feeling shy because you think they will judge you for any mistake but after you will be ok with language will speak without thinking.that's my comment. Thanks

Secondly, I think every country has shy people. Many Asian student are not shy.In fact, their english are not very well and they are afaid of having mistakes. For example, they are misapprehended when they talk to foreigners. Furthermore, they are talk with English speakers a long time and foreigners don't know what they said.
In brief, if their english are very well they will be more pluckier than American students.
    Thank you.

  31. i think it is true. if an american student go to a country in asia, and he/she tries to learn its native language, probably he/she will be shy as much as the asian students living in the u.s. it is normal. at the same time, this situation makes foreign students have some difficulties during the learning process. dont shy, just talk..!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Asian Students are not shy specially those fluently speaks English.. Some are shy maybe because they don't speak the English language well....

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree about that Asian students are sye. For Example, I have been learning English the U.S.A. So many people is Korean in my class. When my teacher try to talk with them, their face become as like a red tomato. Even though, they can't not speak English very well, the other students who are not Asian are more artivity than Asian. If Asian is in full activity, they will be getting better to learn English.

  34. In my opinion we can't classify students behavior depending on their geographical distribution only.
but maybe other factors are more important like student age stage, family education and their circumstances, class room atmosphere , teacher characteristic, student's psychological healthy.

First,I think that it's about the culture in each countries.Like the asian students, some of them need to respect the elder person and do not interrupt while they're speaking or teaching. It sometimes makes the students lose their confidence.I think now the education system has been changed, the students have more confident to make the opinions in classes. It's better.
Second,I think it's about their own habits, neither of the asian students is shy.

  36. I'm an Asian student and I don't think all the Asian students are naturaly shy.
We may seem to be shy in English class because most of us couldn't speak good English.Maybe the teacher is so serious that we are afraid to speak out.
On the other hand, some students are shy by origin. It's no matter if he/she is an Asian.

  38. i think there are so many reasons about this. one reason that is the individual's personality. some are perfectionist who will not do something that they think will not work well. since english is not their mother's language, they will study hard to have good skill first before they speak publicly.

  39. As a asian student, i think the culture background is an important reason. as a child, we are often told to listen carefully to the treacher's word. And, only with teacher's permission, we can stand up and answer the questions that teachers asked. if we made mistakens, the teacher would criticize us why not hard work, and then they would let another one that they think the excellent student to answer the question,so feeling shy will be normal under this environment. However in the American, as far as i known. the children are encouraged to ask teacher questions, and everyone can has his or her own different opinion. At this point, i think that the asian student will make the americans good example, and don't afraid to make mistakens.

  40. Hi,

First of all, Thank you for this wonderful site!

I have been teaching English in Latin America for 12 years now and in my experience, I found that whether a student will act in a shy or outgoing way depends heavily on the teaching style.

When I first started teaching, I worked at a very traditional billingual school. There, students were expected to remain seated and silently listen to what the teacher had to say.

I never enjoyed teaching in such an strict environment because I have always considered that a language's sole purpose is communication!

So, I fled from such "learning institutions" and began working at more modern and conversational oriented places.

I can now say that the active and conversational approach instills in students a more participative approach.

So, my guess is that perhaps, the students you are talking about hail from a very formal and traditional background, whereas the latin american ones do not.

Maybe if you found some Asian students that came from a more participative background, you'd find they are just the same as the latin american ones.

Well, Those were my two cents. I hope it helps!

    Thank you again!

  41. In my opinion, the main cause of the students in Asian are shy in classroom is the teaching way teachers have.As we known,in the classroom,if someone makes noise when teacher is saying something,he will be the one who destorys the class rules, the teacher have to punish him in order to warn others not to do it again.so all the students dare not do it again.Actually,I think,in the classroom, their communication is most important than anything else, maybe teachers can change the way if possible. But I have a question,if students can say anything about the subject in the class, how do teachers control the discipline.?

  43. I also think most Asian students are shy in class due to the teaching style of the Asian teachers. In some Asian countries,as I know, teachers behave very seriously and press a great a pressure to their students,so the students dare not to act actively in class ,they get used to sit silently during class.

  44. I am from China.you said right, most of students are shy beacause of our culture,in my country many people respect teacher very much, talking aloud when teacher is teaching in the classroom is rude, and student will be punished.another reason is the classroom is too many students in many places,if students talk and students cann't hear what teacher says.so making rules is necesarry.

There are many factors which effect a humanbeing- society, surrounding where he lives and grown up, culture, custums, religion...etc.
Shyness shouldnot be obstacle in reaching the possitive goals of life. Asian has been proving their abilities by establishing theirselves in each and every field. Isn't it remarkable?

  49. I think regional cultures and norms have much to do with shyness. Like in Pakistan, in ours region we do not get much opportunities to mixing upper class students. We have separate communities and friends in schools and colleagues. This matters a lot and especially when you come across people not from your type of class or community, shyness dominates.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't think so, all Asian students are shy, but if we consider their culture and customs, we can think that they are. The most of them probably are intelligent and have a hard felling to organazing any objects. To be shy is common for all students no only Asian students, a example is our first day at school... everybody are shy, me too.

I think that shynees is mainly an acqiured character, however we can not deny the genetic effect, it also plays a role.

    ReplyDelete
  62. ok undoubtedly most of asian students are shy because of their culture backgroud. In china, people are educated by Confucianism all the time, therefoce, students in china do not like to show himself.

    ReplyDelete
  63. why are students shy in classroom?
Of course, students should be obey the classroom regulations in schools. As traditional teachers, they hope they are quiet in order to easily control their behaviours.
However, Active learning must come to more effective.

Students must be curious on learning. If they have any questions, they must bravely ask to teachers. But if you keep quiet, how can teachers know what they need?

Besides, being active in different learning opportunities can geat more you expect. For example, on the lessons, teachers may organize some activities such debates, presentations, discussions and games. I want to ask students if you are shy, how can you enjoy and learn from above the activities?

I know many students are shy in front of teachers especially Asian students. Actually, spoon-fed education is a hibition for students. But I must say time is changing, being more outgoing and exploring more you expect!!!!!

  73. I think the answer is given in the question: Asian students with a different cultural beckground and therefore different educational system are shyer because they have come from a different culture and different educational system.

First of all ,in some Asian country, they regard modesty as virtue.
In addition ,at school,in most class, student have only to listen to teacher's lecture.

be shy,but why chinese people are described to be shy.For my own experience,I think it is mainly originated from the chinese culture and the traditional teaching way.
First, china regardes modesty as a good spirit, and the show-off way is considered to be arrogant. The
idea has been past for thousands of years. There are some great ancesters like conficious and laozi.so the idea contributes a lot to the shyness.second,as a young kid,i remembered the classes were centered on the teacher.Teachers spoke a lot but we just listened to what they said,so we became passive .now most the lessons has changed alot, the students
participate in the activites and they like to express their own ideas.we call this students-centered curriculum.and at last, most students behave shy because they are afraid to make mistakes and they are afraid to be laughed at. I'd say don't be terrified to lose face.just do it regardless of the bad comments.
In a word, we should generate some good tradition values as well as let the world hear our voices.

contributes a lot to the shyness.second,as a young kid,i remembered the
classes were centered on the teacher.Teachers spoke a lot but we just
listened to what they said,so we became passive .now most the lessons
has changed alot, the studentsparticipate in the activites and they like
to express their own ideas.we call this students-centered curriculum.
and at last, most students behave shy because they are afraid to make
mistakes and they are afraid to be laughed at. I'd say don't be terrified
to lose face.just do it regardless of the bad comments.
In a word, we should generate some good tradition values as well as
let the world hear our voices.

I think the educational background makes students ' performances different. And the educational background is highly related to country cultures.Asian staudents are always tought to follow the rules that their elders have had set,and their cultures are more conservative than westerns;on the other hand, western stutends are encouraged to express their opinions since their childhood, also, their education situation puts a lot on enlightment, both of which are differ to Asians. That's why I think educational environment makes a big influence in the two type of students.

According to my opinion, Asian students don't consider such like that American students are rude even Asian students are told by foreigners that there study is easy than Asia. Asian students have good feelings about American students and community. I belong to Pakistan and trying to learn english from ESL lab. This is my personal experience comments.

as a asian student my opinion is not all the asian students are shy.but when compared to the americans these have much.THE reasons are the culture, teaching methods and the important one is feels that others are better to them in all the ways. This keeps them shy.when realiases that he is best of all then tries to expose himself.
And one more thing is in all the ways america is developed more than asian countries. so the people also much close to the fact.so finally what i'm dropping is environments makes the people .

  102. Well, to be shy is relevant to both nature and culture. Some people may be shy because of their natures and I believe that education helps them improve their social skills. In order to do this, they should be forced by teachers to be more opened and active. Also some people may be shy because of their culture. As I know from my teachers from US, they told me that young people can not do anything by themselves in Asia. Because, their parents do everything what they need instead of them. As a result, children and teens do not try to be more active and open. And for instance it becomes hard for them to live in foreign countries at the beginning. In my opinion children and young people should be encouraged by their parents and teachers. They need their support to make sound decisions by themselves and to have self confidence.

As we know that cultures in different countries are not the same, I think it is one of the major reasons of students having different study behaviour when having comparison between the countries. Someone is more encouraged and active in the discussion, but someone is just sitting in the class and just listen to what teacher says.
Teaching style can be one of the ways to help students be more active. If teacgers arange more interactive activities, such as presentation, Q&A and discussion, students can have more chance to get involve in the lessons. For my experience, I remember there is a bid arranged by my teacher. And that she wanted us to learn what is trade and the law of demand. =]

  114. Definitely, no one is shy because choose to be shy, or because simply were born this way. Students are shy because they have different education, cultures or backgrounds. For example, in the Asians case, they perceive things different form us, they think and speak different form us. They have their own values, systems, and ways to solve a match or, build a sentence.
Before we entitle someone else as a shy person, we should scrutinize their past, culture and family relations, to avoid unfair labels. Somehow, when we do this kind of thing we star to realize that we are the real strangers in the dialogue.

This is culture in the Asian.
American students are self-confident than Asian. They don't afraid of mistake and the teacher and the parent will help them to solve the problem and tell them what is true when they meet. It's a good way for build up the self-confident to student.

in my country, the teacher is center in a classroom, so student only listen and note what the teacher says. All students become passive in thinking. In hours on classroom the teacher doesn't encourage his students show their opinion due to the teachers always meet time pressure and lesson plan that is overload for their student.

Also I say it is the result of the situation, because they are new in the environment, specially, they have a little background in English speaking, and they are afraid to say the words and sentences incorrectly. The teachers have a special role to correct their mentions and make them comfortable.

What is the reason of this fear? Perhaps we are afraid that we are wrong and our classmate will redicule us.
The most important is remembering that we are only human and we can make mistakes. If you wrong, you can change your mind what make you develop yourself. There are also many chances you will right and you can encourage someone about your points. Don't afraid of saying what you think.
And remember: brave person has a short life, but coward isn't alive at all.

i think shyness begins at home when parents do not allow their children to express their opinions.. it also affects the child behavior inside the class and in addition to this shyness is for the teachers that are not really show encouragement to their student to express their answer or opinion even in time of doubt if they are correct or not...
encouragement of the teacher to all of his student not only for his intelligent students but especially with those students who are poor in communicating to others..and for the parents , open comminication is the key..

Well. My opinion on this topic is that I think the shyness is usually affected on the background of instruction in one's country.
I am an Asian and I think both students and teachers of many Asia countries, including Korea, are not used to have a highly interactive classes having a discussion and sharing ideas as the Americans and the Uroupians do. This is true. For the some parts, of course, students have their own styles that some students are naturally shy and reflective so that they don't talk much because they don't want to make mistakes. However,I think the instruction can solve these situation by interacing more and making students talk more in the class room using teacher's techniques. It would be a teacher's responsibilities to make them active and with that way student will eventually succeed!!

I'm one of shy Asians. And now, I'm working in Canada as a student teacher.
On my first time, I was very surprised at many things that are different from the educatinal situation I had had since when I was little.

First, To discuss is free with teacher and other student in class.
Every student always raise their hands up when they do not understand or have a question. Even though That doens't connect the class. whenever and whereever Student can talk their opinion.
And The most important thing is that teacher never stop when student do that.
On the other hands, There is not natural in Asia.

Second, It's natural to show their(student) talent in front of others. There are lots of program in here. Performance, play the instrument, acting, speech, drawing the masterpiece etc..
Every student are familiar to show anything to the others. Because They are already trained about that. So, They are never nervous to stand on the top.

So far, These are just my thinking.

  166. In my opinion, students become shy because of several factors: educational background, cultural background, and the orientation given to them at home by their guardian or parents. We have yet to prove if "shyness" has something to do with genes. Based on my experience teaching Asian students, there are those who are shy at first but once they get adjusted to the situation or new environment, they instantly transform into very sociable, interactive people. I say the 3 factors develop a student's character. With the right motivation and proper guidance of the teacher, shyness in the classroom can be overcome. CBK

    thanks.

  169. I think there are some reasons that make Asian students shy in their class. The first reason may be resulted from the way that teachers and students work on together. In my country, there are little discussion between teachers and students. In class, teachers often talk and students listen and write only. The second reason I think is due to their English. As they are not good at English and they don't feel confident to talk to other people. Conversely, Western students are encouraged to discuss with their teacher, even when they were in elementary school. That's why they are always confident when talking in front of the crowd.

  170. I'm sure people are differant and students too...But in Asia there are strict rules, so Asian student are made to be shy and very polite. In Europe or the USA students are free from these rules - so they are more talkative, sometimes even rude. But in Asia students mustn't behaviour like that or they would be panished! So it depends on mentality and culture. But we can't judge that - every system has adventuges and disadventages!

  171. Nothing is wrong with being shy. It shows discipline. American students in old movies are very respectful to their teachers, like Asians. American culture got turned backwards, and students thought they were too important and lost their good manners. I hope Asians don't do the same. In fact, American education is struggling behind many other countries. Maybe Western teachers want their Asian students to talk more so the teachers feel at home, but being rowdy has an effect they might not think about.

  172. well,in my country(a typical East-Aisan country)teachers are usually considered an authority so it leaves less chance for students to interrupt them. A student may be considered rude when talking without permission in the class. Also, especially in elementary schools, teachers praise those quiet students while punishing those who is very "active" and talkative during the class. Meanwhile in western it is different. In conclusion, I believe education, teaching style or encouragement can change these things.

  173. Hi
I think the behaviour of most students depending on their educational background, the teaching style. Each student is different and each teacher too. Perhaps a student is shy because is not sure he is a performer person. May be he is worried about the new lessons or is afraid to be alone, whithin friend.

  175. Considering a lot people think that Asia people are shy in the class, I would like say that not all Asia people are shy, and some Asia people are like shy but they are not since maybe that they are not good at English or not familiar with the native guys' topics. Certainly, I agree that some Asia people are shy, because we are human, and a part of human all around world are shy, include American, Asia, European... For me, I am not shy actually, and I am easygoing. But with a lot of culture gap and without good at English, I alway can't follow the other's conversation. In the end, I am just telling that we can't conclude Asia people are shy without thinking about those English ability.

  179. I think that not all Asian students are shy. There are many people all around the world who are shy independently of their culture. And some Asian students probably may look shy because they don't speak English well...

  181. Hi!
I'm Asian. Trere is a cultural differece between Asian and other nations.
Asian persue perfection on every thing in every moments while other nations enjoy their trial and error. So, Asian doesn't act and say before they think what is perfect. My privious Americal English teacher said that "Please act and say with NO FEAR, you have enough ability to show".

  183. People have a different view about
being shy and active, and their value of viewpoint is made of their back ground. In some Asian societies talking too much is often conciderd to be rude, so they don't also want to talk so much in a class because they don't want the other people to think they are rude people. On the other hand, often being quiet is considerd to be shy for Latin people therefore they might think the Asians are shy. Telling your opinion is important and natural for the Latin people. In this point the Asian people's viewpoint and the Latin people's view point is differnt, and they are made of their backgroud.

  185. In my opnion, the perfect student is who talks only when the teacher asks. On the one hand, if children were too shy, the lessons could be very boring because only the teacher would be talking. By the other hand, if children were so rude, the lessons would be a chaos, teaching would be impossible.

Of course I know it's very difficult to get it, but I think it's fault of the culture and global education.

    Thanks!

  190. Great topic. I am a parent trying to understand why my chinese sons seem shy in America.

One part, i made the mistake of over emphaszing they shouldnt talk to strangers.

I recently notice this. I can be outspoken somtimes. I realized that my chinese peers (either co workers, or fellow volunteers in chinese group events) do not like it when i seem to outshine them. when I am outspoken, i also become slightly outcasted. what a shame, but I going to learn more tact, but still hopefully this errant symptome of homgogeny will vanish during the next generation of new thinkers.

  193. Most students in my country Vietnam are quite shy in classroom. And me, i'm not an exceptional case. I am familiar with silently sitting in classroom and listening to the teacher, all things talked by teachers are always true. I rarely give my opinion without knowing clearly the answer. I scare i say something wrong and my classmate and the teacher also laugh at me, that's it!

  196. Shyness is a specific character of each person. So we can not force someone to be very shy, or not be at all. We can only ask the person concerned to be silent and unobtrusive.
However, each teacher imposes different working methods. Some teachers require a respect that makes shy students, some not, and some needs that students listen and remain silent during their course, while others need to interact with the student. The shyness of the students will have to adapt to each teacher and each course.
A shy student posing no question can also be disturbing for a teacher than a talkative student who does not attend classes. In both cases the teacher can't know if the student has understood the course.
Also, I think the culture of the country will strongly influence the behavior of a student.
An Asian student will probably be more shy than a student in Europe.

  197. Shy or not it is a choice of anyone can be choose, but the true is, shy people has more difficulties to learn another language, because you need to interact with others and practice conversation. This will improve much better your speaking.

  198. There are different methods of teaching in classes, the most effective is when taught with love, sometimes a student it is difficult to adapt to a class because of schedules, classmates and materials, but the friendships and the way in which take things that help you get ahead and not decay
