Lawyers: What role do they play in society?

The word, "lawyer," often conjures up different images in people's minds: one the one hand, someone who helps provide relief to those who have be injured or who have suffered injustices, and on the other hand, a person who is dishonest and is only looking out for his/her personal interests.

Yet, what role do lawyers plan in your own socities? Are there times in our life that you would benefit from having a lawyer on your side? If so, when? Have you ever had positive or negative experiences in working with a lawyer?

Share your ideas.

  1. Hello everyone,

Fortunately, I've never worked with a lawyer. Here in Brazil, the only image that comes to my mind when I hear the word "lawyer" is that of someone who's always doing devious things to try to take advantage of somebody else. Of course, I must say that there's an exception to every rule.

Furthermore, sueing someone (a company, etc.) in a court of law demands time and patience. For someone like me who works almost 24/7 it's ever harder to keep track of any case (be it a simple or a complex one).

Thanks for bringing up such an interesting topic, Randall. :-)
    All the best,

  2. Nowadays there are so many lawyers working in differents ways in our society, but unfortunately many of them have been unreliable people.

Firstly, be a lawyer today is a difficult work, because there are so many problems to resolve and to many people who need their help.

However, i had bad experiences with lawyers for the reason that they usually are people who like to talk more than really to do something to help you.

To sum up, we need lawyers to work in our cases, but we must choose a good lawyer to do not increase our problem.

  3. Dear Randall
    To whom it may concern

Lawyers in Japan often work for nothing, for example, in consulting about laws,on calumniation.
To be a lawyer in Japan is so difficult that they are very wise and reliable. They always contemplate, but get talkative in cuorts.
They are fewer, compared with other countries. So they are increased recently, but average aptitude and skill of them are said to be getting lower.
I expect them to work for people's rights, stability and peace in our society, and relief:lawyers are reliable and we can rely them whenever we want to.

  4. Hi everyone,

To be lawyer is a keen competition in South Korea. I know they studied very hard to be lawyers but too selfish in my country. Aren't they the true meanings of the lawyer, justice and fair?

I can assure everyone that the majority of the lawyers correctly know the purpose of justice but they don't practice.

I heard there is a special lawyer who doesn't receive any money in USA, called pro-bono. I know it's difficult to have a job like pro-bono, for working without any charge. But at least, lawyers can follow their kind heart. That's what i want to say to every laywer in the world.

Thanks for reading my unexcellent opinion,
    Best regards,
    Jay in S.Korea

  5. Hi ,

The lawyer is the best job which can make the best revenue in South Korea has two sights to common people .

One can contribute themselves to suspected people by dishonesty , and the other place more their benefit to justice .

And what's the rule of them in society ? To make more money than the others ? Absolutely NO . And then .. To alleviate the punishment of those who give bribes to lawyer ? It can't be .

I think that their positions in society do protect the people from injustices .

I heard that there are many volunteers in U.S but not in S.Korea....

This is my first visit .
    Thank you , Randall

In India the lawyers are used to effect by the politcs and political leaders badly. lawyers always do favorable justice in the side of politicans if any of their persons related to them are involved in the case, because of which the poor indian people losing their future.

Indian lawyers should improve themselves keeping the poor people of india in their minds.

thank you for giving me this space to write my opinion.

  7. Hello All,
    This is Sudeep from India.
In my country, being a lawyer used to be a highly glorified profession, till, a couple of decades ago. But in the recent times, the judiciary as well as the community of lawyers have suffered a downfall. I, till now, haven't needed the assistance of a lawyer. But still, I know that the legal fights in this coutry take a lot of time. The extreme slow pace at which a legal fight progresses, makes it utterly tedious.

  8. hello one and all,
thank you mr. randall for such interesting tooppic.
its unfortunate to say that the image of lawyers has been undermined by their selfish activites. they are tend to align with the opluent people and poor people eventually left to face the unjustice.

for God's blessing, i'hv never come across with a lawyer. according to me the besst way to resolve the dispute is mutual understanding and consultation among own. otherwrise same outcome will appear at the cost of money and contentions.
    thank you.

  10. Hi everyone,

Fortunately i have not worked with a lawyer yet. Being a lawyer means that they have a lot of responsibilities towards the society. But here in India, all are in the race of becoming richer than the other. Honesty towards professionalism is not followed. They defend or prosecute people for the crimes they have committed. They have a lot of clients to have a conversation with about their situation. A client of lawyers pays a lot of money to defend them. Even though they are good or bad, they still have to defend themselves for their own rights.

    "Professional ethics is not followed"

    Hello,
Yes we once hired a lawyer. It was a robbery case and he consumed lot of time in resolving our case. It was really irritable for us. Inspite we have to tolerate them. We cannot force them into our direction, so one has to be patience and cool.

  13. Hi,
Last year, when I was going for my final exam I had a thought about hiring a lawyer. While crossing highway I seen a 30-35 year old guy asking her mother to leave the home forcefully because his wife have some disputes with his mother. She was almost 60 & begging to her son.At that moment I thought I should go & talk to that guy to behave properly with her mother. If he denies I should go with legal ways.

If one of my family member owes my money & refuses to pay me back I will not take that person to court but I will ask our family head to look into the matter & to help me.

  15. "LAWYER" the first thing which comes to my mind is a person in black and white, arguing with other layer of other side.I think being a lawyer is one of the most difficult job.He has to take referances from wide range of books, texts, journels, etc.Compile ideas and reproduce it in court in precise manner.
The profession of lawyer according to me is social,to the people and for the benefit of the society. They act as medium to get justice and punish the guilty. They help society to clean corrupt people.
At last a lawyer always try to win the case given to them, but they should always keep their conscience and support truth.

  17. Hello every one,
I am from India and fortunately, i too have never worked with a lawyer. A lawyer is a good professional person, i mean his duty. If we see the cases here here are very few fellows who work correctly. Most of the lawyers here work for politicians and for some popular persons. Most of them prefer money than their duty. Even though it is a small case it would not be solved in a month, it took so much time here.
But if they work correctly they plays a major role in society.
They are the only persons for our hope to proceed in a legal way.
Thanks for giving such a nice topic....

I've never worked with a lawyer in any case. In my views lawyer is a person who can transform the fact with only his way of speaking and presentation. Either right or wrong both prospects may be there with a lawyer based on his personal choice.
Sometime its good to consult them, on the other they may also take advantage of you.
If i got indulge in any money case with a relative then i think its nice to resolve it with personal means like intervention of a known. Despite of going to court i'll choose an easier and way that have more chances of soon results.

  23. Practicing law is a glorified job in itself.
But because of a few practitioners who misguide the actual happenings, people nowadays have little or no faith in the court judgement.
Lawyers tend to support parties that give them monetary and material benefits and hide the facts which leads to injustice on the part of needy.
People move on to other means- personal settlement, intervening of a common person to settle the matter, rather than moving to the lawyers for getting justice.

  24. I still have no such experience of getting into touch in a legal matter and so as to take legal advices from a lawyer, but personally I think lawyer a person with great responsibility. He deals with what is right and what is wrong. Therefore, his valuable thought is so required and for a layman like us is really benefited from his legal advises.

  25. I have never hired a lawyer to make a settlement with anyone.i think first off all we should try to resolve the situation at our hand with full efforts and may be the other person is in some great problem.so,first of all, know under which circumstances the following condition occured.and when you know that the other person have some evil
things in mind then i think hiring a lawyer is the most appropriate thing ,one must do.rather than indulging in any evil practice.
If some of my family member will not give me my money back,i will first try to settle the situation by talking in private to him/her.iwill try to understand the actual condition. But i will not hire any lawyer against any of my family members.

It's not an easy task to become a lawyer. It's Just not a profession to survive but to provide service. Most of them are money-minded.But,are they treated well in the society? I don't think so. They never get their recognition.

It's easy to point out others mistakes but difficult to find a solution for it. If we give them due respect and recognition the situation will surely change. There by the lawyers will support for justice.

  28. Hello Everyone,
Lawyers form an integral part of a country's judicial system. They are brought up to serve their client's best interests. They undergo 4-5 yrs of intensive training through which they develop a comprehensive understanding of law.My only experience with the law came when my uncle went to court for a bounced cheque case. The case dragged on for 6 yrs incurring additional expenses along the way notwithstanding the lawyer's fees. The case ended positively for
my uncle and his 6yr toil did finally seem worthwhile.Court cases are extremely slow and one should take informed and intelligent decisions if contemplating on going the legal route. There is also the possibility of an out of court settlement. This definitely saves a lot of time and effort.

  29. Lawyers play a very important role in our society. They help in keeping the presence of law in the society. With out them many cases wouldnt be solved and justice wouldnt be done to many of the people who have filed the cases believing that some justice would be done.

I never hired lawyer because didn't required yet but I think that
Like other professions, lawyer is also one great one in the world but in this case, thinking of lawyer plays great role in society. as crime getting increased..their demand is also getting increase.
If one has trueness in his mind then obviously he help to solve dispute of public without taking much more amount. but some lawyers are also there those who work for some politicians, they work their under, they can do anything to win case..
In short, they plays great role in society only if one has trueness mind and also help to a lot of dispute in society that help to improve society environment.

Hello Everyone. According to me, lawyers play a very important role in our society. However we can solve some small issues ourselves by discussing them with the other party or with the help of a known.
But when the matter is big, we have to take the help of the lawyer in order to get justice. But in India the judicial system is very slow and it it takes years to settle a case. That's why people here prefer to solve it outside court if it is possible and not waste their time and money.

  35. Hello Everyone. Yes, I had been in such condition where I hired a lawyer. As one of my fathers friend was in need of money for his business and my father helped him but after few years when the person had return the money he refused saying that he already had given the money with interest which was not true. My father tried to sought out the matter out of court as he was his friend but finally we have to do a legal case on him the case is still going on. And yes for anything wrong or illegal you must hire a lawyer in order to get justice. But in India the judicial system is very slow and it takes years to settle a case still it is the best way to get justice and also now fast track courts are also there where the cases are solved very fast within three or four hearings.

Hi everyone, i have an experience with a lawyer settling the finance case .There are some tenants who are not paying monthly bills for a long time .so we reported a case against the tenant describing that he was not paying the monthly bills for a long time. The court went through the discussion of both the lawyer and the tenant and gave the decision as he should pay the due amount and also interest for the amount which hasn't been faced .

  37. I had met with an accident in 2006. Within two years of the mishap, I got my due, thanks to the judgement passed by the Civil Court. The lawyers however, became increasingly painful to deal with as time passed by, right until when I received the compensation.

  38. Never faced such a situation to even consider consulting a lawyer.
Its always better to resolve the matter outside court. The better way is that both parties compromise on some parts and resolve the case, instead of wasting time and money.
If still the case is unresolved then certainly one can consult a lawyer.Dragging a family member to court who owed me money and later refused to pay ?No,i won't.

  39. Hello everyone,

As is the case of many a people here, I also have not worked with a lawyer before. But as far as law practice in India goes, it is by far one of the most tedious processes as there are lot of cases pending from the previous years and corruption is widespread even in judiciary. So as far as an ordinary Indian citizen is concerned, it would be considered as a complete wastage of time and money. Because even after going through all of this, there is no guarantee of justice being done. So a lot of people here prefer some out-of-court settlement by bringing in some influential people and prefer to stay out of the legal tangle.

  46. Lawyer can bring us a lot of great benefits. First of all, it can make a person avoid from going to jail for all the wrongthings that person was wrongly accused of. Secondary, lawyers can be famous once they did a famous crime and they won and a whole lot more.

  47. Fortunately, so far I haven't had the need of taking legal action against any person or organization. However, as an engineer it is very common to have legal conflicts for construction malpractices. I'm not speaking about big disasters such as foundation collapse or excessive settlements due to wrong designs but about small problems such as leaks, which in many cases are responsibility of the general contractor or subcontractors. Here in Costa Rica, the National Engineers Association has a legal service called "Center for alternative Resolution of Conflicts"where you can settle an agreement without taking it to the judges.

When it comes to family if is far more complex. As any conflict related to money, it depends on the amount of money that person owes you. Sometimes it is better to avoid further conflicts but in other occasions there is not other option than taking legal actions.
