College Expenses: Who Pays What?

According to this poll on my blog, the most common way for students to pay for college is to rely on parents for support verses paying for it themselves. Granted, paying for college isn't cheap, and scholarships are often not available. However, I find that students at college sometimes have little sense of managing their own finances and perhaps rely too heavily on their parents' pockets to pay for everything. Then, when they have to pay for some expenses, they often overuse credit cards to cover things. This can lead to debt and then the kids boomerang (return) back to their parents for help. So, in the end, what could be a good balanced approach to help students with the high costs, but at the same time lead them to become responsible with money? How do people in your countries and cultures teach independence and careful money management? Share your ideas.

  1. I think there's a similar situation in Taiwan as well. For the most part, still many students rely on parents' financial support. Although they don't have to be fully responsible for the money-making part in families, they need to have the basic sense of finance. Parents should help students to use their allowance efficiently. Moreover, it's important for students to build up money-saving habit that could invest their future from now on.

  2. I'm not sure, but it may work. Why not use some computer program for home bookkeeping? I use one of these and it helps to understand where your money go. It needs some selfcontrol, as you need to write down your expenses in it but it takes one or two minutes a day.

  3. I am from Korea. My country students are obliged to depend on their parents because university tuition is so expensive. With their part time job most Korean students can be unequal to their tuition. I also agree that students have a part time job. In my case, I had a part time job when I was a student. But this money was just my pocket money. I think that if I had worked to make my tuition, it should have been a heavy burden on me. And I think I learned enough to manage my owe finance through my part time job.

  4. I am from Mexico. In my country the parents who are working, they open a savings account to save money to pay for the College tutions. There also other way parents can help their kids to pay the College tutions and kids can work a part time job to also help pay for their college, or they can work a full tiem job and attend night classes if they parents can not financially support them, but they can live with their parents until they graduate.

  5. I am from Japan. In my country, most students depend on their parents' financial support or student loan and scholarships. In Japan, many high school prohibit students do a part-time job, so it is difficult to pay for college by themselves. However, ollege students usually do a part-time job for their pocket money or living expenses. So, they might know how diffiult to earn and save money and how to manage their finance.

  6. I'm from Vietnam.I think college tuition in Vietnam is much cheaper than major countries in the world. But still ,many student rely on their parents for the tuition . Many of them have a part-time job, but it is usually for living costs , because most of them study far from home . And with student living with parents like me ,part-time job is for experience and my private money

  8. There are two main streams in terms of paying for college tuition fees in Hong Kong. Some of the families, parents are mainly responsible for saving money and paying for college although some of the children may work part time for some non-essential items like music, eating out or trips. On the other hand, some dropouts of the college or children from poor families, who have to go to work after finishing their secondary education, may have to pay for their tuition when they choose to go back to the college. Interestingly, the students who pay for their tuition fees or at least part of the tuition fees are more responsible for their school work. They dive into their studies as the study is their choice. On the contrary, the students whose tuition fees are paid for by their parents may assume they are fulfilling other people’s dreams but not their own. Moreover, gaining job experiences give students incredible advantages. For example, they can develop their network of interests at work as well as the practices of pitch, and they also have the pleasure of earning money to spend and grow independently.

  9. In Vietnam, although almost students are supported by their parents, 80% of them get part time job. It's spend for their extra courses (Language, skill, advance..), entertainments or living cost (for students from far regions). For student, part time job is very essential, help collecting experience, managing money, arranging time as well as improving communication.

  10. I'm from Palestine. I think that student have to share with a part of his tuition in order to feel with some confidence and self dependence. As I know, it is hard for a student to have a part-time work and study at the same time. Yet, I'm myself did that. I had a part-time job beside my study hours and , to be honest , that is a great experience I ever made. It made me very strong and dependent . so to conclude, the student is advised not to relay only on the family for his study expenses, he has to work hard and help himself at his study

    Thank you for reading

Also when you attend university some students try to find part time jobs to help their parents with the tuition and fees of the university. In addition the government of my country some times does programs to help some students to pay the fees and tuitition.

I am from Dalian,It's my honor to share my idea with you .For my part ,I rely on my father'financial support .Since mom has passed away five years ago,all the burden of life has been put on my father'shouder. At the same time ,I almost did nothing to help him, truelly I am really ashamed about it .In my opinion,we can take a part-time job in our spare time to bear a small part of tuition and life expenses, not only we reduce some pressure of our parents in this way but we realise the ture meaning of life .

  13. I believe it's not so desirable that he/she is in charge of all college finance because excessive money-saving effort will prevent him/her from going deep into the study, essential goal for entering college. But I think we should not ignore the sense of independence in economic or emotional aspect which is a real capability in the future life. So parents and their children will take partial charge of college expenses, about fifty and fity

  18. in viet nam, paying for colleaue is parents 'responsiblity. the school which you choose is depend on your parent's pocket. if you can't go to colleague or even study in a unfamous school, your parents will lose their face with others. that's why vietnamies parents work hard to open a colleague gate for their son or daughter even many of them are not sure if their child attent to studying or not. the way they give their child money can't create a responsibility for the money from their child.

  19. I had read some of your post.
Well, I ill would love to share also , This is all about My Personal Experiences.

In our traditional way here in the Philippines and the most common way for students to pay for college is to rely on parents for support. Why?

But for me honestly speaking, As an income inequality standard of living,
I generally think that We are rich Before. but time passes by that our family encountered some serious and traumatic problems(trials).
Our Standard of living became @ the poverty line. We don't have money anymore for our daily needs, I don't know how we survived in a traumatic problems. Just to look cool,I still pretend that our we have a normal standard "not poor but standard" i pretend to be like this to have friends and so people wont judge us nor discriminate us and etc.
Before, I used to hate my life, that I need somebody or anyone Who I can consult about My self and My problems. I hate my self because I see myself before (plastic)(trying hard).
Then I just go w/ the flow of life. I met many friends. that I don't usually do. In My young age I got this so many questions about myself.. Looking up for myself searching for who really am I.

I know My parents are all scared about what might happen to us, We might have some traumas* or etc.

But in my young age I tried to think like an *analytic thinker*
to consult My self so I tried to build My self 3 Different Personalities the 1st 1 is named Julius Raymon Ual Mariano , The 2nd one is Julius Mariano AKA "doraemon" and the last one isMy Original Bestfriend named "Jesus"

Time passes by and finally I Graduated H.S :) .

When I reached college. I try to make myself more matured and wise about choosing friends and a Special Love one.
I thought I can already figure out My Self But time passed by.
I realized that I am Living with Lies, I cant even recognized myself. I tried to be matured w/ out consulting anyone about My life
Then I finally thought* that I found someone* I learn how to sacrifice , How to Listen, Learn things, Experience things, and ETC.

Then suddenly a day just come that I thought "Everythings gonna be alright"(I love Bob Marley's song).
then it time passes by that i lost my tempter i gave up my self and follow my emotions w/ out Consulting Jesus.

We and My Special some1 had some misunderstandings. We argue about how to set my priorities. then I lost my tempter , Gave up my self and follow my emotions (TBC)

  20. Hi! I'm from China. Most parents will pay for tuitions and fees.Morally,we don't think students have responsibilities to pay.

I think if students can pay themselves at least part, they will understand how hard to make livings then. Surely, they'll treasure parents' money.

Good to say, over half of Undergraduate students in China start to thinking earning money by themselves. For example, they'll have part-time jobs in summer vacation like tuturing high school students and having internships in corporations.

I think from their experiences, students will change their attitudes to become real adults.

  22. In my culture parents are usually responsible for tuitition. Students cannot afford it because they are not able to earn so much money. It is something really Korean.
However, a percentage goes to work. If students earn money, it is their responsibility. They can use it like they want to. Of course, for leisure or school is another option. It is possible to learn to handle money.
A similar post might be there, but I think more can be said. Beginning from elementary school, education plays a significant role. Just learning is not sufficient. Being one of the best is the way to achieve success in Korea. A good university guarantees a successful career. The education market is booming. Therefore high tuitition fees are reasonable. As a second generation Korean from Germany I came to study in Seoul to be more close with my family. They support me. Nevertheless, I want to be independent sooner or later like every university student. Many already are. The signs for their independence are doing more recreational activities, I think.

  24. In my country, Peru; Fortunately, the public universities' tuitions are not to expensive(relative cheap), but the issue is when you have to deal with private universities. If you want to study in a private university in my country, you need to make a lot of money to afford it. Nonetheless, in my country, student's fathers are obligated (by the government) to support their kids until they finished the university. However, Not all fathers do it. So, students are pushed to work by themselves in order to make money to afford the university.

  28. I'm a graduate student from China. The college tuition is very expensive in China. The opportunity for scholarship is not often available. Most students achieve their studies by college loan and/or relying on their parents. Some students do a part time job to balance living expenses and recreational activities. One could gain some social experience through part time jobs but they lose lots of time which should have been allocated to their studies. Consequently, they do not have very good accomplishment. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not very appreciated with doing a part time job. The goal that we attend in a college is to learn knowledge and skills but not to earn money. If we have not enough money to pursue our study, we should apply for a loan and/or ask some help from our parents. We should study hard and get good scords so that we will have more opportunity to find a good job after graduation. We can pay back the loan and/or the money that our parents gave us during our college study.

In our country most of the students rely on their parents for paying tution fees for their degree programs, but in Government universities the fees is low as much as you can pay them by your own, those good student who not get admission and their parents are also not able to support them then the rely on student loans and if he or she is lucky may awarded scholarship.

Mexican students usually pay their tuition and other expenses they have with the money they receive from their parents, but is very common too that they get a part time job near University in order to get extra money to help with that.
Unfurtunately, it is common too students that leave College because of financial problems, that's why now goverment is implementing some programs to help students with this kind or issues.

  31. In Chia, most of college students' parents pay the tuition. But it depends sometimes.
My roommate is very poor, her parents can not afford her tuition. So she borrowed the tuition and living cost from bank, at the same time, she took part time job, received scholarship to support her family and herself. After she graduated, she paid back the bank monthly. And now her brother is a college student, she is supporting him too.
Take me as an example too. My parents paid my 4-year college's tuition and 3-year's living cost. When I was a Senior, I found a vocation job, so from then on, I supported my living cost.
Although most of Chinese parents pay the tuition, it doesn't mean children receive only, no boomerang. Some Chinese children will support their parents after they are independent. It's not a kind of college tuition boomerang, itis a kind of love boomerang.
When I was Senior, student credit card were more and more popular in China. But I never applied for one. I thought students have not enough financial independent, we couldn't support a credit card. But many students liked them very much. I have no idea that how do they control the budget. I like to save money, I am traditional.

  32. Personally, it depends on the situation. If the student has the capability to do some part-time job to earn enough money for the tutition, then the student should pay it by himself/herself, for instant, most western countries. However, it is not always being able to do part time jobs for students. Like China, students, or even the other people, hardly to find a part time job, consequentely, how do they pay for the school fee if they didn't have any incomes?

  34. If you want to escape the problem to pay tuition and exonerate you parents from it you can always enroll in free university course. For example in our country, in Russia, almost every university has a small quota places for those students who is very cleaver and get the highest score on the entrance exams. But if you are not so successful or clever to enter on budget places you have an alternative to move to the country where education is free of charge for example in Norway. But first of all you should learn their language.
But if you want to study in Russia and your parents can’t pay for your education you have also possibility to enroll in evening education. All the day you are working and in the evening you are studying. But it is too much difficult I know it by my own experience.
I think that if your parents are able to pay for your education let them make it for you. You could don’t think about money. You will sit in the library all the day, reading interesting books and you will don’t feel yourself tired.

  37. Teachs to young people about responsibility is hard. Becouse someone has to pass a lot of troubles and more to teach someone about responsibility, to theachs about how to administrate money is more hard. It has to born the instinct in one, to learn about the responsability on money. In my country the parents of each young people help to them to pay the university. So in my country is more easy to pay and control the young people or students.

  39. Is not different in my country. People have buckled down to pay for their tuitions, even in the high school. But I’m sure that is not only in Brazil. In a great part of the world, institutions of education charge real fortunes to teach. Am I correct Americans? Governments connive with that, because it’s convenient. Thus, they don’t have to be worried with professors, faculties, managing campus and its structures. Free market! That’s the rule. The only thing they’ve forgotten is the basic concept of education. In another words, when you have to pay for your tuition, you cannot utilize it as a whole, because you have to work parallel, and consequently, you are not able to study every time you need. In Sweden, for example, you don’t have to be worried about payments, because the government pays for everything. They realize that if you invest in education, the rest is up to the population. If it is right, or wrong, I really don’t know. So, it’s up to you. Go to find out in Sweden.

If they can get a part-time job to do, they still hope to get some from their guardians because the money they earn is less for them to pay for school fee.
According to my idea, I think that parents show thier childrem any good way to save for the school when they need.

  44. Hi! I am from India.Like most other countries here also, children rely on their parents for all financial support till they start a job. But,I feel it is ridiculous. The people need to get their head around.I personally feel
that it hinges on how parents take care of their children. What kind of school they are choosing. It comes second that either parents can pay or not.I think, the more importanat thing is that what standard of other children have? The children will be uncomfortable if they don't maintain same standard of living. So parents should keep in mind about this thing. If they are earning just hand to mouth, they should not try to afford a school that need a high fees.
On the other hand,I will draw your attention towards children responsibilities. There must be some responsibilities that should be given to children the sooner the better. For e.g. the parents should get a mobile for their kid if he ready to afoord the monthly bill. That's all I have to say about this.

I think that in Costa Rica the majority of the parents pay the tuition of their children. Well may be 40 percent of the students pay their own bills. When the students pay the tuition and their expenses, they are more responsable, spend less money than before and in some cases they help their parents with the houses' expenses of course depends of the job they have.
In Costa Rica 35 percent of the students have a job or a part time job, but it depends of the country's province and the necessities that the students have.
I think that, when the schools students work is for necessity to buy their own things.
On other hand they pay both schools expenses and non-essential things.
When the students have gotten to be independece they are more mature people, understand their parents and save money to avoid whatever things that could happen in the future.

  57. I think that the students are the responsibles to save money for paying the university or college because the benefits ot the study is for the student and the future of the student is product of the study.
If a student pay at least part of the university or college, i think that can obtain many experience, for example save money, don´t spend money in not essentials things, also for learning about the cost of the life, when the student pay the university or college obtain many experience that can help in the future.
Now in day many students have part time jobs and some times this is for paying the university or the college.
Manytimes the student decide look a par time job because perhaps the parents don´t have money for paying the study.
Sometimes, when the student work part time, they spend the money in things that are not necessary, perhaps, because the parents pay the college, so they use the money in parties, cloth and other things that are not important.
when a student enters to the university, this student enters to other stage, during this process the student feel most freedom, the he or she go to many parties, sometimes they want live alone in a house o department, want work and get money, during the process the univrsity student suffer many changes.

  59. hi, well I think taha here in C.R. the culture is very different as in USA, most of the times our fathers pay our tuition and that is not good because we keep being dependents from our fathers, so, I think, in my personal opinion that is not a good way, and maybe we have to do the same as the people from USA do, and our sons can grow in a independent way.

  60. I think this problem depends on the countries. in U.S. parents pay for bill of school until child is 18.
many countries pay for it until children graduate the university or college.

  62. Hieveryone,
In Vietnam, of course tuition is not too much in state colleges but parents just naturally think that they are obliged to look after their children untill they graduate or even untill they get married. However, in recent years, many students have tried their best to be independent. They find part time jobs and manage their own finance. They can not only pay for tuitions and other school fees but also for their own pocket expenses. We don't have enough boarding houses at university and students are not used to homestaying so they often rent a small flat and share with 2 or 3. many students come from rural areas of the country so their parents can afford their children's finacial demand . However, most these students learn to have basic sense of finance and build up money saving habit. generally, student's life in Vietnam is not decent and you must both study and work harder if you study at private uninversity.

  64. Hi!!! I'm from Colombia. In my country, many parents pay for the tuition, however students like to have a part job to help their parents with living expenses or academic expenses like books.

There are two kind of colleges in Colombia, public college (government supports colleges) and private college (not supported by government funding), so private college is more expensive than public.

Access to public college is more difficult, for this reason students who don't have the opportunity in a public college or don't have their parents support can take a credit from different ornatizations like Banks or ICETEX (A colombian institution created by the government to support education system)

  65. Hi,
I'm from Thailand. Similar to most posts, most Thai parents support children for college fees. However, there are also some of students that are needed to pay it by their own. And, of course, they need to get a part-time job or a scholarship or a soft loan from the government.
In my view, earning money by themselves would make the students responsible. Moreover, managing money in their pockets is another important issue that they need to learn and their parents should help them. For example, parents can give kids money monthly and let them manage to spend all expenses by themselves. So, they would decide how much they want to save, spend or invest.

In some cases, smart students who take excellent grades and don't have enough familiar economic sustain don't pay anything and is the Government who directly pays the fees and gives an extra budget to the student, but you have maintain the good grades every year.

  68. Education roles a big play in everyone's life where parents are accountable to their children schooling. Thus college education still responsible for parents or not? Who pays on it?

Most of the country have a rule that parents have a great function to their children education, since toddler until it grows up as professional. Some parents do their part to send their children in school until college, in which these family belongs to average or above average standard of living but there are some parents who belongs to below level or belongs to a poor family they cannot continue their role in sending their children to college because of financial. Inspite of this, there are some children take part time job to augment their education where their parents cannot pursue on it. They did not mind the hard of being a working student or their college education is apart of parent's responsibilities, but what's in their mind is to finish their studies for their own good for the future.

Therefore I conclude, that education is not depend on who pays it, but its everyone's responsibilities for the success.

  70. Hi, I'm from Brazil. Here are two ways for a youth to enter university. In fact, there are two types of university and two ways to enter. The first are the private universities, some are good, but most are not, to enroll just pay, it's simple, and then you can begin classes. But the great model of university in my country is the public university, funded by the Government. They are really great, but they are very difficult to enter, students must take an examination to test their knowledge, then those who had better be accepted at the university and is better than free. Then, if you pass in the test, you don't have to pay anything because the government pays for you. That's great, right?

  72. I definitely think that the education system of the U. K. and of the U.S. is financially appalling. After graduation, students are indebted. I don't exactly know how much time it takes them to pay their debts. But the one thing I am sure of, is that I would not like to live with such worries. In the U.K. some students even drop out of university, or choose not to enrol at university. This is unfortunate because they do have the capabilities to do something great. I definitely think that students have to be realistic very early and very quickly, so that they understand that life is not easy and that if they want something, they have to work hard for it. However, the financial burden imposed by countries such as the U. K. and the U.S. is just too much.

Very often, they pay not only for the education, but also for their entertainments, clothes and other needs. But I think that, in spite of the fact that parents can pay for their children`s education, the students must find a part time job, at least on pocket expenses, because it will teach them to understand the price of money and not to spend them for useless things.

  78. After reading all blogs sent by people from different countries, I shall say that I felt lucky somehow. Education is almost compeletly free for the students in our country from kindergarden to graduation from university, yet parents are responsible of other children's expenses including pochetmoney, transportation, meal costs, providing textbooks and other supplies. It is very common that children depend on their parents to meet their needs and cover all their expenses, moreover it is unacceptable for the students to work during school time especially for female, and oftenly looked at those parents who let their children to work to cover the costs of their daily need as beeing crud or unkind to their children. since I 've been living in canada for a `while, now I see how students struggle to affored tuitions which require them to work part time sometimes full time between the courses. sometimes they have to postpond their admission to the college untill they can offered tuition which I believe it is such awast of time. yet I believe it is essential for the students to learn how to manage their financial issues by themselves, and their's no way better than working in their free time in order to value money and learn how to spend it both effciently and wisly.

  81. Hi to all of you.
University is differente in Spain than in UEA. There are two types: publics and privates (much most expensive, only for people with possibilites). The first, public ones, have a standard price for each credit. You can study the credits that you can pay. There is a special price for good students. If you get an A+, you'll get the same free credits for the next year. The cost of each course (4 to 8 credits) is between 150€ till 300€ for a year, each matter. If you study close your home, it will be cheaper, because if not, the main cost it probably will be the dormitory, the food and the transport. Other difference as could be you can select a major if you obtained the required rating. The highest are for medicine and engineering.

In order to avoid misunderstandings and life troubles some parents are making his children to have a part-time job, others gives them a pocket money once a month to spend wise.
The thing is, a lot of this life-moments depends on person, how wise parents are and mostly on luck.

  89. In Taiwan, parents pay most of the school fees. Take my friends for example, although 70% of them have more than one part-time job, the major financial support for tuition and housing relies on their families. Studying in a public college in Taiwan for one semester costs thirty thousand dollars for tuition, ten thousand dollars for school housing and five thousand for textbooks. Moreover, if you are a boarder, you have to spend money on everyday meals and transportation cost is rather high. Additional costs for college students in Taiwan involves graduate parties, club fees, donation to department activities, money for dressing up, etc. Generally, students spend their earning on the additional costs rather than tuition and school fee.

  91. Well, I think a good balanced approach to help students with the high costs is a part time job. For instance students could learn how to be responsible with money. Futhermore, it would be a good idea to use home bookkeeping program, which would help to track all income and withdrawal. In my country this is the way to teach independence and careful money management. I hope it was helpful. :) 

There are also many cases students work and study at the same time and also help with the cost of tuition or that only works on holidays or weekends and save up the other half.

  94. In my country China, it is surely the parents are responsible to pay the tuition for children. Compare to North America, Chinese's University tuition is much lower and can be afforded by most family. It is not a big burden for us.
Actually a lot of parents have been prepared for a long time. some of them even had bought all kinds of education insurcance for children before they got pregranted. Such kind of insurance is not only debit bust also share account. This gave them a full preparation for the children's tuition.
Although kids dont need to pay for themselves, more and more students are taking part time job in recent years, this is because our goverment encourage students to take more social activities and try small business earlier.

  95. In Vietnam, most of students have their parents paid for not only their tuition fees but also a monthly grant towards living expenses as well. The fist solution,Therefore,is students must be teached to take responsibility for their money. For example Give them a monthly budget for some specific tasks. This could mean setting students a monthly budget for their living expense which includes tuition, school fees, books, and housing. If they take this money and spend it on clothes, or going out, then the consequences will teach them a valuable lession. The second one, I think, is let student finance them self by working their way through college by part time job at the available time such as evening or at weekend. However , the things is most of student in Vietnam study far from home so the wage just fulfills their living expenses so student still needs help from their parents

  99. Here in our country, we all live our lives depending on our parents. Especially when it comes to education. Parents are always expected to give their children a better future by letting and supporting their children's education. But it doesn't mean that we as their children could not give at least part of the expenses they always shoulder. I remember one time when our instructor told us about the real duties and responsibilities of parents here in our country. Parents are not really entitled to send their children in a college school/universities after finishing High school and have a quality education there, and that it is stated in the constitution. Our instructor emphasized that "It is their (our parents) kindness and love for us as their children that they still choose to give us a quality education in a college or university and for us to have a successful lives in the future. Indeed, we can say that in small and simple things we do for them will surely make our parents proud of us.
