School Lunches: Something from home or eat out?

For most high school students in your country, do they eat lunch prepared for them in a lunchroom at school, do they bring something from home, or are they allowed to leave school to get something near by at a store or restaurant? Also, how have food choices and tastes changed over the years? Please share your ideas.

  2. In our country,China. it is depended of policy of every high school. In some high school, all students must live in school in the week, so they have to have their meal at school. In some high school which students could go to home for lunch, or have lunch in a lunchroom at school, some students have to eat at store or restaurant as these students's parents couldn't cook for child in noon, not time.

  3. In most public schools in Brazil, students eat in a lunchroom where they're served food prepared by the school cooks. Each day a different kind of food is served, and the choices are made by a nutrionist who works for the city hall. I myself also eat at school and the food is delicious. It's a way of saving money as well.

  4. I usually bought my lunch in school's cafeteria when I was a senior-high-school student. Meals there were cheap. Some students would brought lunch boxes from homes, which kind of means the same like a sandwich bag does, doesn't it? Just like that we often see in the Hollywood movies, you know, kids on the screen always take sandwiches in their hands or backpacks. I wonder is it real in the US schools that kids are always taking sandwich prepared by their moms. Cause if it is, then those kids might be too furtunate to have meals cooked by their families, thank God!

  6. In my country - Brazil - students spent only around 5 hour per day at school, that means boys and girls usually have lunch at home or in restaurants near the school when they have to come back to school for any extra course. Some private schools have restaurants which offer good quality food too.

  8. I just wanted to respond to Katherine who asked if children in the U.S. usually bring a sandwich to school in a lunchbox prepared by their mothers.
I grew up in the U.S. and my mother prepared a sandwich for me everyday. I loved my lunchbox, but I did not love my sandwich. Everyday the same thing: peanut butter and jelly!

  14. Hi, I am Adelino from Brasil. I would like to share information with you about Randals lessons and it is very good for learning english too. In Brasil children usually take lunch at home because the school time runs in the morning or in the afternoon. The time classes are 4 hours a day.

  15. In Trà Vinh, Viet Nam, students usually go home for lunch, because they have to prepare their lunch or dinner by themselves. However, some day, they are so lazy, they can eat outside in some store. The students have never brought their lunch to school, they just bring a bread or some cookies or s.th like that and water.

  16. Here in São Paulo, Brazil, most public and private schools have a snack bar on their premises. So, students are not stimulated to take homemade snacks to school. I strobgly believe that food sold at those snack bars is unhealthy since it contains a high calorific value; besides, it is too fatty and salty.

  23. In my country (Spain) most children have their lunch at school, which is prepared by a professional catering company. However if they live quite close to the school and one of their parents don´t work they ussualy go to their homes to have lunch. Actually I don´t have a job so I go everyday to take my two daughters home to have lunch. I save quite a lot of money and they have a bit of rest.

  25. It is really interesting to read comments from different countries.

40 years ago, when I went to school, we had a school kitchen, a professional cook, a nutritionist who determined what to cook. The pupils had a schedule when they volunteered in the kitchen and set up a table, prepared food, clean floor, washed plates ... we also had scheduled days when we controlled the entrance to the school and from the school. Each student would make a certain number of volunteers during the year. They would also take us by bus to some hwy or park, so we clean the environment, but mostly to have a fun..we learn responsibility and unite
