English Teachers in the Classroom

So, how much does a teacher's use of English affect students' learning of the language in the classroom? As you can see from this poll, only 37% of students responded that their teachers use/used English usually or always in the classroom, where as 29% said that their teachers seldom or never use/used English. What do you think the reasons are for these results, and in what ways does this affect students? Share your experiences and opinions on this topic.

  1. Yes!! I've been thinking that's a big problem. When I studied English at high school, we learned only reading and writing in order to translate English to Japanese. But the grammer is completely different so that if we translate in our brain when we speak English, we can't catch up with the speed. And when we listen to English, we can't understand immediately. The teachers should explain English by using English. We shouldn't have used Japanese when we studied English. I really think so. But the teachers also couldn't speak English with fluency because they also studied "Japanese-English". I hope the situation will change soon for our children.

  2. It is not surprise to get this result because many teachers understand that scores of the students are really afraid of speaking in English ,therefore the teachers try to teach them in a funny and easy way , it will make pupils feel happy in learning English.

  3. I think it's almost impossible for the teacher to speak only English in class when this class is overflowing with students. At the moment the teacher starts speaking the language, students stop paying attention to the teacher because, unfortunately, most of them either have very little knowledge of the language or are not interested in learning it whatsover.
In a class of 40 students, sometimes only 5 to 10 students are really interested in learning the language.

  4. It is better to have a class in English only, it does not mean that a teacher can not use the other language in a certain moment to explain something that would be very difficult to understand in the foreign language. I believe that people is more happy when they hear the class in English. Evidently, the teacher must use gestures and graphics, etc, to make possible the correct comprehension of what he says. The speed of the teacher when he speaks in English must be adapted to the level of his students and little by little he can start to speak faster.
