Eating Habits in Different Cultures

Eating habits can vary from place to place and even from family to family. If you travel, it is good to know some of these differences so you fit and don't look out of place. In Japan, people use chopsticks for many of their meals, but their are rules for using chopsticks as well. First, you should never lick your chopsticks. Next, you should never pass food from chopsticks to someone else's chopsticks because something like this is only done during a funeral. Also, don't leave your chopsticks sticking out of a bowl of rice or similar food item. As you can see, the simple idea of eating with chopsticks is more complex than it first appears. So, please share and eating customs or habits people should know if they visit your culture.

I also think that it is important to learn differnt cultures and habits to compare them with ours to make changes or to learn more about those countries.

  9. I think eating habits from any culture are a very important thing that most people should at least have an idea about. It would not be a good thing to travel to another country and act as a fool when sharing lunch or dinner with the natives from such cultures. So it is a priority to be informed on how diferent cultures have their eating habits.

  12. That is the interesting thing about traveling and knowing new cultures because you can find new food, religion things etc. The good thing about trying new ways of eating or new food is that you can go change your usual way of eating or of using other things to eat.

  14. I grew up in the U.S. and pretty much ate dinner at the dining room table every night while growing up. Here is a poll to see where you eat dinner usually: http://www.apopularitycontest.com/display_poll.php?ID=5808

  15. Well, if you do want to fit and don't look out of place here when having lunch here in Brazil, you must be ready to eat at least twice. So, don't put too much food on your plate for the first go. Brazilian (especially those of Portuguese origin) will probably force you to eat more, and if you don't accept it, they'll believe that you didn't like their food.
