Classroom Behavior: Shy or Not?

I often have students from many countries in my classrooms. Students from Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Columbia, and many other countries. I know what to expect when these students come together for the first time.

Some of my students speak out and actively engage in the classroom without a care in the world if their grammar is correct or not; other students, however, are almost paralyzed with fear, and they won't say anything until they are absolutely sure that their grammar is perfect . . .  and by that time, I'm eating my lunch 20 minutes after the class ended.

Unfortunately, all of these students don't know how to interpret each other's classroom behavior. Are they shy? Are they asleep? Are they bored?

Thus, during the first few days of class, I try to explain how past classroom experiences and expectation in different countries affects what students say and do in my classroom.

Thus, my question to you is this: Are students from your country hesitant to participate in class, and if so, why? Share your ideas.

  3. Not all Asians are shy. Only Japanese students are hesitant to speak out. One reason is that they don't want to be viewed as being outspoken. Another reason is they simply lack the ability to speak English. Japanese people can spend their whole life without speaking a word of English.

  4. Some students are outgoing and very involved in the class, but others are shy or fearful that their classmates will make fun of.

  5. That situation occurs because the students don't have the engough knowledge to discuss the subject in class. Thus, they don't feel like speak.

  10. In Brazil, there are several foreign language courses. I've done some of them and there are shy people in all of them. They may even know how to speak, but they are ashamed. The other option is that they do not know all the content and are insecure in talking and making mistakes.

  11. Firstly, thanks for your beautiful site.
I think most of students in Asian are shy. Because they were born from traditional family. They must always listen their parents and don't argue. Your parents always right! So, they also hesitant.

  15. I think that depends of the students and teachers sometimes the people don`t respect their teachers or meik jokes during the class but is neccesary the docent put rules in his classes for example when i was in the school was dificult to pay attention in the classes because there were a group os the students that always was bothering in class and the teacher did nit say anything so that depends of the students and teacher

Every day I getup at 6:45 am.Then 7:15 I get dressed and eat my breakfast, at 7:45 after I left home and walk to school I arrive at 8:00 am and go to the classroom and I finish my school day at 12:30 but we take a break for 30 minutes and we have to go back to the classroom . We don't have a place to eat lunch like a cafeteria so we just have a big area in the middle of the school where we do our different activities like physical education and we play different games every day. This is my schedule for the whole week .

  27. It seems related to Asian culture, especially confucianism. Confucianism teaches kids to be polite and respect people. Most important Confucianism manner is listening to other people. So, Asian students are usually don't express their emotion.

  28. In my country, you are right when talking about the students is fear. They are really hesitant before say something in the classs, because they are affraid of their grammar that making them not confident. I Think we should change the way to study with strongly confident.

  30. Of course, the culture is an important element in person's behaviour at classes. As I noticed, for Asian children it is normal to be shy. I remembered how I was silent at school when I didn't do my homework or don't know answers. I became reddish you know...It was awful. Now I am more confident.

  31. But I think that the teachers in the Asia allways want to control class. Although in the Asia are many student in a classroom and teachers cannot to attend evrybody. so it is impossibe that all of the students speak. You may speak if you are more TUFF than others.

  39. In Bulgaria, our school starts at eight a.m .We need to be at least fifteen minutes before the classes start. I am normally there from seven thirty a.m. Our school year is nine months long. From first grade to fourth grade we finish school on 30th May, fifth and sixth grade we finish on 15th June and seven grade and up finish on 30th of June. When the class starts everyone stands up and greats the teacher. Then the two kids that are in charge of the class homework say to the teacher how many children are there in the class and how many of them have done their homework. The children that did not do their homework get a note in their school report. Then we start the lesson. Our breaks are ten minutes long. Then we have a big break that is twenty minutes long. Our school hours are forty minutes long. We usually go home between twelve and one p.m. Some kids stay the afternoon in the school, because they have more classes. They do their homework there. We need to wear the school uniform every day and the girls need to have tied their hair on a bun, ponytail, etc. If somebody is late, our teacher does nothing. If someone has forgotten something he/she need to look from the other person. In our school, two kids sit on one desk. When you are fourth grade and up, you have a class president. He/she goes to the meetings. They try to make the school better.

  40. In my opinion, most of students are shy in the first time especially Asian students because of many reasons. First, a new environment has many different culture so they can't integrate with other students.Secondly, they can't be well in English. Besides that in their culture, they always respect their teacher through listening their teacher speaking. However, in many cases, it depend on your contents in your lesson. Therefore, you should make a plan for each student to understand their problems.

Even in a group of very shy people there is going to be one person who is a little bit less shy than others (although in a different group this person would be probably silent).

In my country a nightmare school day is:
When a student usually wakes up to 4:30 am and waits for 5 minutes and other 5 minutes and finally he gets up to 5:00 o clock am, he gets up afraid. quickly he takes a shower in 5 minutes and gets to dressed and he takes a breakfast and to go at school running. he arrives at school at 6:15 am, them student enter to class and he remembers that his homework is on the table of his bedroom, them takes a snack at 9:30 am he eats empanada and soda, and he returned at classroom and 5 minutes before finish the class, he is asleep. but listen to bell and again he stand up of chair and return at home. when he arrives, he takes a lunch and sleeps all the afternoon. more later, listen the phone, and is his friend and the student gets up at 5:oopm, he told his friend and at 8:oo at nigth he take food in family and his mother tell he that must washes dishes and glasses, and finaly he goes to the bedroom, he sit down to do the homework and he falls sleep on top of the task

  52. Well. I saw the students are very closed in Latin America with

  57. In Colombia where I come from, English lessons are often seen as a must and not as something that is part of your life like in other countries. Due to a non so great educational system students dont get English lessons at the first years of school at the public entities, and thus they are kind of oblige to take private lessons or courses at adult age, which it makes it really complicated for them, it is well known adults have more difficulties to learn and feel much more shy to speak in front of others especially in a new language, so many of them retire before accomplishing them goal.

In a conversation with foreigners they really want to talk with them but they think in their mother language and then translate it into English (in their mind) and then think if it's grammar is true and then sputter it carefully and oops where is everyone?

Well, I think all the students are a little shy and they are afraid because they are starting to study another foreign language, but I think they will probably improve over time, if they practice every day, maybe they will have more confidence. they have to learn how to keep the conversation going and how to move the conversation forward

In Vietnam, students only say their opinions in case they are sure that they are right and in almost of situations, they think that their opinions are wrong so they keep silent in class.
This make the teacher do not understand their teaching method is suitable or not.

  82. In my opinion, the students are hesitant when join in your class because their mother language and culture have many differents
they feel that they can't talk to everyone easily
there are many habits in your life during living in country that need change to adapt to new environment

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well, in Vietnamese schools, rarely students are shy in classes.
However, this could happened with some students manly because they are autism, have mental illness, the pressure of homework and most sadly, being bullied by other classmates so hard that they rarely talk again. But overall, this is really rare in Vietnam.

  85. Before going further, i would like to thank you for this interesting subject because, with this subject, you allow us to think about what people who are come from in other country feel, how it is difficult for them to have discussion with native people. Sometimes, it is because they have a bad accent, they don't know yet how they can pronounce that word and they decided to not talk by thinking if they don't talk, native people won't laugh them. It is why, i advise native people to encourage them to communicate thus they will feel alone and live the situation as a bad experience.

Firstly, I want to thank for authors of this website. I think this website is very usefull for English learner. Thanks so much!
Secondly, my opinion about question: "Are student from your country hesitant to participate in class? and if so, why?" is: Some students in my country are hesitant in class, other not. Because it base on character of each student.
Addition, different cultures is a factor make student in my country hesitant in class.

    ReplyDelete

  90. They maybe hesitant on the first month of meeting because they don't know each other probably they his classmates come from different countries (languages), But getting to know each other will change his/her shyness. In my part it happens to me in a first week of school but as we go along they become my friends though its hard for us to understand when some are not the same with our language. We just have to be friendly so we can understand each other.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I would say no because, I believe that they are shy, and needed more time to grow. At times I am afraid to participate in my classes But as soon as I get intimate with my classmates I am no longer shy or afraid to speak. 99. Well i have a feeling that some pupil hesitate to speak because of their language insecurities, say what other students think of me if i say anything wrong or made any grammatical mistake. And secondly because of their attitude or the way of living, sometimes their parents would be the reason for that,as they didnt allow their children to go out and mingle with other peoples,so they create their own world inside their room with TV and laptops as their friends.

In Colombia, students are free of these rules, so they are more talkative, sometimes even rude. But we can not judge that, they are different cultures.

    ReplyDelete
  101. In my opinion, The students meet this problem at the first time. They are not confident in themselve because they are not sure about their idea or thinking,so they really unwilling to interpret what they want to speak. Maybe, they feel shy when the classroom have many new friends. Stuff like that.

  102. After my reserch, I noticed that almost all the students in my contry start the school day at 8 am, so they have to go to the school earlier; they take the plublic bus every morning to go to school; also they have a lot of subjets, such as math and grammar as well.

  103. Well if you want to mix people from diferent countries is like experiment. Sit and Wacht what they do, try to extrapolate to their entire culture and then try to undestand historical facts, like wars, economy, fisical bodies, everything. Sounds asome.

  107. I read a lot of others comments. I completely agree these ideas that Asia tend to more shy than foreign countries such as Europe, America so on. There are 2 reasons: (1) Their cultures, (2) Students seems like to fair to fail, in fact, English is taught by many themes of grammar so their relief is not sensitive. The solution is nature. The students from different countries need to long time for adapt to live unless they are shocked. Moreover, the English books should be specific, comfortable, easy to approach than focus on much academic matter and stuff like that.

  110. When teaching a second language you have to take under consideration the age, place and level of each student. Can't assume all learn the same way

  111. It depends of the teacher and classmates, if there is a environment of respect and to help each other, it will be more easy to learn. Besides the teacher have to be ingenious to share the subject; so the students will feel the commitment to study

  121. Personally, I have never raised my finger in the class to participate. The only times I have raised my finger were when I wanted to go to the bathroom, and most of my classmates were like me. Only a few students who were very good at school participated. When I look back at the way my generation received their education, it really hurts me, because teachers didn't care about wether the students understood or not what they were being taught.

  122. Ortega rios and patiño cuenca :

is a basic exercise but very good to stimulate and improve the listening of the English.

the exercise helped me to recognize my virtues and shortcomings to improve my listening of English.

the only mistake that I find in the exercise is that you can reset the results and the student could cheat because his can memorizing the answers after resetting.

  127. It depends on the personality of each person,
other way, they are not confident about their communication, inside foreign language specially. I think you should have small games and simple to help them interact easily. Confident increasing of student is the best way to change your classroom.

  128. i.when a person is faced with a new environment, he/she experiences the different feeling such as fear or shyness. these feeling related on the people approach to life. if a person want to accept by all of the people, fear of not being popular or rejection can caution him/her.n my opinion, shyness is a changeable personality character.

    ReplyDelete
  131. well, i think the reason why students hesitate engage in class is culture. Asian students will often be shy when they meet strangers and it is difficul for them to make a conversation with new friend especially foreign friend.

  137. I am from Vietnam. I have been studying English for 13 years but I just use English very limmited. Those first years, our English teacher didn't encouraged us speak English. They only taught us grammar, it was so difficult and boring. And almost my friends didn't concentrate on studying English.
I am 25 years old now, and I have been studying English serious for 8 months. I did not know where I have to start. And now, I feel that my English skills are increased since I started to practicing English with the others. It is driving me more confident at my English and less shy to talk with others.
